The Tyrone Lady Eagles won an important game against Huntingdon on Wednesday, January 8 to maintain second place in class 4A.
Tyrone junior Alayna Woomer led all scorers with 21 points in a 54-37 victory for the Lady Eagles. Junior Claire Lehman was also in double digits for the Lady Eagles with 12 points.
“Huntingdon played a zone defense on us,” junior Claire Lehman said. “I think that we utilized our skip passes which led to open looks and shots. This is what helped us score 11 three-point shots.”
Alyana Woomer opened the game for the Lady Eagles with a successful three-point basket.
Tyrone used a defensive press to cause quick turnovers from Huntingdon, helping the Lady Eagles to go on a 14-0 scoring run to start the game.
The Bearcats didn’t earn their first points until just 2:25 left in the first quarter.
Huntingdon senior Lily Fiscus scored all 7 points for the Bearcats in the first quarter and ended the game as the Bearcat’s leading scorer with 20 points.
The Lady Eagles were effective from beyond the arc making 5 out of 11 threes in the first quarter. The quarter ended with Tyrone up by ten, 17-7.
Alayna Woomer scored the first points in the second quarter with another three-point shot, causing Huntingdon to use a timeout.
The Bearcats struggled with fouls in the second quarter, giving the Lady Eagles multiple attempts on offense. Alayna Woomer continued to lead the way in the second quarter with 3 three-point shots.
Tyrone’s Lola Woomer was effective on defense, causing a fast break lay-up after a block underneath against The Bearcats.
With five seconds left in the 2nd, Senior Alayna Greene scored 2 points off on an out-of-bounds play. The Eagles took an 18-point lead into the second half.
Sophomore Brielle Parker scored the first points of the second half at the foul line. Lola Woomer was effective in the paint.
The Bearcats came out aggressively in the second half with a steal, but they attacked the hoop aggressively and missed an open lay-up. After a quick rebound, the Eagles sprinted down the floor and junior Claire Lehman drove to the basket, getting the bucket and the foul. She completed the traditional three-point play on the foul line.
After another steal from Lola Woomer late in the third, Parker hit a three to end the third quarter 46-21.
Lehman scored a three-point shot to start the fourth quarter for the Lady Eagles.
With the Eagles in the lead by 28 points, The Lady Eagles JV players got some varsity experience in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Eagles had 11 three-pointers and 8 blocks in the game.
