Tyrone girls soccer team is still searching for their first win of the season but came close with some quality play in a double overtime loss at home against Central Cambria on September 5.
The girls dominated the possession game through most of the contest but were not able to put the ball in the back of the net.
Despite the loss, new Tyrone Head Coach Ben Rivera said that the game was an encouraging step forward.
“It’s the best they have performed so far in the season,” Rivera said. “[We just need] time together as a team, it doesn’t happen overnight, but we need more practice.”
Central Cambria scored on a goal from Ava Barra in the first half to give the Lady Red Devils a 1-0 advantage.
Tyrone freshman Mya Plummer scored Tyrone’s lone goal on an assist from sophomore Allie Blaska in the second half to tie the game at 1.
The rest of regular time went scoreless with Tyrone maintaining more possession in their offensive zone, but were unable to score, sending the game into overtime.
No one scored in the first overtime period, but in the final minutes of the second overtime, Central Cambria’s Barra scored the game-winner for the Lady Red Devils.
It was a hard-fought loss for the Tyrone girls.
“We played absolutely awesome, and the score just didn’t show it,” said Blaska, who assisted on Tyrone’s lone goal. “I think we changed everything during this game and we just need to continue it.”
