Lady Eagles Beat Bellwood in Backyard Brawl 8-1
Behind a strong pitching performance by sophomore Cate Baran, Tyrone softball made history Saturday with a 8-1 win over rival Bellwood Lady Blue Devils, the Lady Ealges first win over Bellwood in many years.
“It felt good to beat Bellwood in my senior year,” said first baseman Emily Lehman.
Baran’s one-out walk in the first led to the first run of the game. Following the free pass, sophomore Winnie Grot came in to courtesy run for C. Baran. Sophomore Ally Jones then drove the ball to right field for a single, moving Grot to third. Senior Emily Hamer then collected the first RBI of the game with a high fly ball to the left field, allowing Grot to tag and score.
In the bottom of the first, Tyrone got two quick outs, but couldn’t get the third without Bellwood scoring. Bellwood’s Faith Patton hit a triple to right fielder Emily Baran to get into scoring position. Jestelynn Heaton then hit a double down the third base line to score Patton and make the score 1-1 after the first. C. Baran struck out Attie Poorman for the third out.
C. Baran started off the top of the 3rd and reached first on an error by the shortstop. Grot came into courtesy run again for C. Baran. Jones also reached to first on an error by the shortstop. Grot and Jones then advanced to second and third. Lyndsey Fleck came into run for Jones. Hamer came up to bat next for the Lady Eagles and drew a walk from the pitcher Hailey Schmidt.
This loaded the bases for sophomore Callie Maceno. Maceno hit a single to left field for Grot to score. Grace Gensimore and Emily Lehman also hit singles to make the score 5-1 at the end of the third inning.
Both teams then held each other from scoring until the sixth inning. In the sixth and seventh inning, the Lady Eagles brought the bats again to gain three more runs to make the final score of the game 8-1 Tyrone.
C. Baran got the win for the Tyrone. She allowed four hits and one run over the seven innings, striking out ten.
The Lady Eagles racked up 11 hits in the game. Madison Coleman, C. Baran, and Lehman collected multiple hits. Hamer and Gensimore had multiple RBI’s for the team too.
The Lady Eagles next game is Tuesday, April 17th away at Penns Valley at 4:30 pm.
