Lady Eagles Advance to the District Semi-Finals
The Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Indians from Juniata by a score of 62-49 Friday night in the quarter-finals game.
“The scoring was very balanced. Girls hit shots at key times,” said Tyrone Head Coach Luke Rhoades.
Sydney Shaw lead all scorers with 18 points, followed by Emily Lehman who netted 12 and Mia Kosoglow with 10. Shannon Shaw had 8 points, and Lindsay Fusco added 7.
The trio of Shaw, Lehman, and Kosoglow was very effective throughout the game, taking turns providing offense whenever the Lady Eagles most needed it.
Before the game, Coach Rhoades told his team that all they had to do was to play with maximum effort and that’s exactly what they did. The hustle and energy that they brought to the court were what won the game for them in the end.
“We played with a ton of energy. The girls were diving all over the floor and giving it everything that they had,” said Rhoades.
In the first quarter, Lehman got Tyrone off to big lead scoring 6. Lindsay Fusco swished one from behind the arc and the Lady Eagle’s defense limited the Lady Indians to only 3 baskets to end the quarter with a 15-7 lead.
“The energy that we played with throughout the entire game was really the deciding factor,” said senior Payton Wagner.
The second quarter started off the same way with hustle plays and balanced scoring. But Juniata’s Josie Swartz got hot and scored 8 in the quarter. The Lady Eagles held the lead 29-22 at the half.
In the third, Juniata cut the deficit even more but both of Shaw sisters hit key shots to calm everything down. Sydney Shaw hit back to back threes, and her younger sister Shannon grabbed 4 to head into the fourth with a 45-40 lead.
Mia Kosoglow scored six in the final frame and the Lady Eagles went 9-15 at the stripe to end the game.
The Lady Eagles play the Penns Valley Lady Rams in the semifinals tonight at Huntington at 7 o’clock.
