PV Rams ‘Braught’ Down by Tyrone
Tyrone came out on top in a competitive Mountain League game last night against Penns Valley, 62-50, due to a stellar second half and a fine defensive effort.
“It was a great all-around team win. We were getting all the shots we wanted, but some weren’t falling,” said senior Keegan Gwinn. “It made it a more difficult game.”
Landen DeHaas led Tyrone with 23, followed by Keegan Gwinn putting up 11.
Penns Valley made it difficult for Tyrone to score at first, opening up in a 3-2 zone.
In the first quarter, senior Cortlynd Rhoades got Tyrone on the board first by draining a three-pointer from the wing. The remainder of the quarter went back and forth, ending in a 16-11 Penns Valley lead. The second quarter was more of the same as Tyrone went into halftime down 22-21.
Tyrone’s main challenge was shutting down Penns Valley’s 6’4 205 pound senior Zach Braught. Tyrone rotated who guarded Braught, with David Lang, Zac LeGars, and Landen DeHaas each taking a turn. Although Braught scored 23 points, the Tyrone defense did a good job limiting his attempts, and almost all of his shots were contested.
After halftime, Tyrone picked up the intensity. Senior Landen DeHaas forced many steals that led to breakaway layups.
Senior Keegan Gwinn also grabbed numerous boards, helping Tyrone to limit Penns Valley’s second chance opportunities.
Tyrone was also able to crash the offensive boards, allowing Ross Gampe, Keegan Gwinn, and Jake Johnson to get easy baskets.
Penns Valley dropped to 0-3 on the season but has been competitive in all three losses.
In the JV game, Tyrone dominated, coming out with a 50-33 win. Dravyn Crowell led all scoring with 14 points.
Varsity will take on Susquehannock tonight at the Hollidaysburg High School gymnasium.
