JV Quiz League Makes Its Return
Question: What happens two or three times a year and is all about answering questions?
Answer: JV Quiz League!
In quiz league, students compete against other local schools in a game show-like format with questions based on general knowledge from a wide variety of categories, in categories ranging from academic to popular culture.
The JV Quiz League did not compete last year due to COVID but they were back in action this year with two competitions in Altoona.
In a JV meet in February, Tyrone won 2 out of its 8 matches. At the second competition in March, Tyrone won 1 out of 4 matches.
Junior Varsity/middle school Quiz League is a predecessor of high school Quiz League and is made up of students in eighth and ninth grade.
To answer questions participants have to beat the opponent and be the first to press the button, and then answer correctly. If the opposing team buzzes in first and doesn’t answer the question correctly, then the other team can have a chance to answer.
JV Quiz League is a great way to get experience for high school Quiz League and students have a lot of fun doing it.
“I had a fun time meeting new people and learning new information. As team captain, I was able to help guide the team and I was able to show random facts that I have learned throughout my life. Even though quiz league might sound nerdy, it is not an experience someone would want to pass up and I look forward to doing it next year,” said freshman Sarah Zimmerman.
This year’s team was made up of eighth-graders Clark Tuscovich, Aiden Miller, Paige Hoy, Lily Fenstermacher, and freshman Jana McCartney, McKenzie Ramsey, Nora Hoy, and Sarah Zimmerman.
Even if students don’t win, they have fun and learn a wide variety of things that the quiz league covers.
A question similar to what might be asked is during a match is, “Name this field of physics. Its ‘second law’ states that the total disorder in the universe never decreases.” (obtained from the NAQT website)
