Question: What is special about the Tyrone JV Tyrone Quiz League season this year?
Answer: The Tyrone JV Quiz League team will compete in the playoffs for the first time ever!
A team of all Tyrone freshmen that includes Karter Bokulich, Gavin Brasher, Sarah Dale, Brody Hoover, Potter Myers, Rachel Pederson, and team captain Nick Sutt went 7-4 on the season and will compete against Hollidaysburg in the playoffs — for the first time in school history — tomorrow, February 11.
“Making the playoffs for the first time in school history is an incredible accomplishment and a testament to the hard work, dedication, and teamwork of these students,” chemistry teacher and quiz league adiver Mike Funicelli said. “I couldn’t be prouder of how far they’ve come and how they represent our school with pride and excellence.”
Tyrone competed against Hollidaysburg earlier in the season and lost, but that doesn’t mean they are ready to give up.
“In that game, we didn’t answer many questions,” team member Potter Myers said, “but since then we’ve learned how it works and we feel like we will be more confident to buzz in.”
Quiz League is an academic competition sponsored by Intermediate Unit 8 in which schools from across the region compete in a quiz show format trivia competition.
Questions vary in difficulty and cover all areas, from English, science, history, social sciences, and math, as well as questions from the world of sports and pop culture.
“It could be anything, the question topics are all over the place,” Funicelli said.
Funicelli singled out Nick Sutt as the team’s leader.
“Nick is our captain and he is really good at trivia. Plus, he’s getting better at knowing when to buzz in, so hopefully he can lead us to an upset over Hollidaysburg,” Funicelli said.
One of Tyrone’s best matches of the season was against Claysburg. The team won lights out with a score 260-0.
“We just knew every question and beat them to the buzzer every time,” Myers said.
The team went on to have several high-scoring games. They defeated Tussey Mountain 250-20 and Williamsburg 200-50.
One of the closest matches of the season was against Chestnut Ridge, where the Golden Eagles lost a nailbiter 110-100.
Tyrone will travel to Altoona tomorrow to take on Hollidaysburg in the playoffs.
