Tyrone JV Boys Basketball Goes Undefeated
It seems every year the JV boys’ basketball team goes unrecognized. But this year’s team worked hard to change that by recording a perfect 18-0 season.
The team had three close games while the others were blowouts. Tyrone has had two close games against rivals Central. They also had a close game against Central Mountain that came down to the buzzer, but Tyrone pulled out the win thanks to a Blake Brooks buzzer beating shot.
When asked about the shot, Brooks’ response was “I always watch Dirk Nowitzki on TV and I just wanted to be like him.”
The team always seems to have different leading scorers every game. They have two big men in Anthony Politza and Preston Mitchell. The guards are efficient shooters as you can see in the stats. The guards include Blake Brooks, Nathaniel Soellner, Mark Lewis, Tristan Lingafelt, Zack Soellner, and Shane Geis.
When asked how it feels to control the offense and give up opportunities to score to get assists, Shane Geis’ response was” I just do what the team needs and if that means giving up scoring then I’m fine with that.”
The highest scoring game this year belongs to N. Soellner with 24 points against Bald Eagle Area.
When asked on how big of an impact it is to have shooters on the team Soellner response was “I feel it is hard for opponents to guard the team and it allows everyone to score instead of having one player scoring all the points.”
The starting lineup for the team is Point Guard, Shane Geis, Shooting Guard, Nathaniel Soellner Small Forward, Tristan Lingafelt, Power Forward, Anthony Politza, Center, Preston Mitchell. Zack Soellner, Blake Brooks, and Mark Lewis come off the bench.
Halfway through the season, Politza the starting power forward only plays the first half of the JV game before being taken up to varsity. As a result Brooks has had to step up in the second half of the game and become the starter.
The JV team was the first ever JV team to go undefeated. At the last game the coach of the team Travis Anderson said “It was a great season, even though we don’t get a trophy the future looks bright for you guys.”
