THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, Release Date: October 7, Rated R
Based on Paula Hawkins bestselling novel, The Girl on the Train follows the story of divorcee and alcoholic Rachel (Emily Blunt), who after a night she can’t remember, finds out that a woman went missing. Finding out that the woman lived in a house on the same street where she used to live, and knowing she was in the neighborhood that night, she gets involved to find out what happened. As Rachel’s involvement gets deeper it leads to dangers, and the uncovering of the truth about people who she thought she had figured out. The premise alone is interesting, but the trailers are what capture the audience’s attention. By withholding information to keep the ending a secret for those who haven’t read the book, the trailers are what really sell this movie. With an A-list cast, this is one of the most hyped up movies of the month, and it is sure to be a home run with moviegoers.
Also Starring: Justin Theroux, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Luke Evans, Edgar Ramirez, Allison Janney, and Lisa Kudrow
THE BIRTH OF A NATION, Release Date: October 7, Rated R
Due to director and star Nate Parker and his past history, plus the subject matter, this is one of the most controversial movies in recent history. The film is about enslaved baptist preacher turned rebellious leader Nat Turner, who witnesses the treatment of his fellow slaves and soon turns into a murderous rebel. This story is one that has not been brought to screen yet, even though its significance is marked down in the history books. Besides Parker’s controversial history, it’s coming out during a time where race relations in America aren’t the best. This seems to be this year’s big historical film, but it may have trouble attracting an audience due to its subject matter. Nevertheless, it looks like a promising historical film depicting the story of Nat Turner’s rebellion and who knows, maybe it’ll be a surprise hit despite the bad buzz surrounding it.
Also Starring: Gabrielle Union, Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Penelope Ann Miller, and Jackie Earle Haley
THE ACCOUNTANT, Release Date: October 14, Rated R
It seems that the past couple years have been Ben Affleck’s resurgence into the limelight. Although I wish his directing debut, Gone Baby Gone could be included, Affleck’s resurgence didn’t really start until 2010 when his heist thriller The Town came out. He went on to direct and star in 2012’s best picture winner Argo, then starred in 2014’s surprise hit Gone Girl, and became the best part of Batman V. Superman, and now he’s back at it again with The Accountant. Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a mathematics savant, who uses a Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firm as a cover up while he makes his living as a freelance accountant for dangerous criminal organizations. When a Treasury agent starts figuring out who Wolff really is, the body count begins to rise. Not only is it another film during Ben Affleck’s period of really good movies, but it appears to be one that has all the right hype to keep the audience guessing… Who is the Accountant?
Also Starring: Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Tambor, and John Lithgow
CHRISTINE, Release Date: October 14, Rated R
July 15, 1974- A news reporter by the name of Christine Chubbuck commits suicide on the Sarasota, Florida news channel, her final words “In keeping with Channel 40’s policy of bringing you the latest in ‘blood and guts’, and in living color, you are going to experience another first-attempted suicide.” This movie will tell the story of Chubbuck and her life behind the camera as well as in front of it, leading up to the shocking death. Playing Chubbuck is Rebecca Hall who is said to be giving an award winning performance. What makes this story stand out is in a world where we see movies about rich, good, or bad people doing things, we don’t often get a movie following just a normal person. Depicting Chubbuck’s struggle with depression, trying to live a normal life, as well as being against the network’s use of violence in its reports makes it a must see.
Also Starring: Michael C. Hall, Maria Dizzia, J. Smith-Cameron, Tracy Letts, Timothy Simons, and John Cullum
KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES, Release Date: October 21, Rated PG-13
What happens when your new neighbors are undercover government spies? That’s answered in the upcoming spy comedy Keeping up with the Joneses. When a new couple moves into their neighborhood and suspicion gets the best of the Gaffney’s, they end up getting involved in an international espionage plot. Comedic spy movies have been popular among audiences since Mr. and Mrs. Smith, even though this movie lacks the type of star power that movie had, it does have Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot. Playing the average couple is Isla Fisher and Zach Galifianakis, and alongside Gadot is Emmy winner Jon Hamm who play the Joneses. Maybe not the breakout hit of the season, but when heavy dramas are coming out due to Oscar season being right around the corner this may be the levity that moviegoers will be attracted to.
