The Tyrone Boys Basketball team had their season opener for the Mountain League on Monday, and they fell short against Hollidaysburg in overtime, 61-60.

Landen DeHaas led the team in scoring with 20 points, while Keegan Gwinn followed with 14. Tyrone did well getting to the line and making free throws, going 14-21.

Rebounding was Tyrone’s ultimate downfall.

Hollidaysburg jumped out to a 7-0 lead, as Hollidaysburg forced Tyrone into three turnovers. After a slow start for the team, Cortlynd Rhoades drained a three-pointer which helped give the team momentum to follow. The 1st quarter ended with a 15-10 Hollidaysburg lead.

Tyrone outscored Hollidaysburg in the second quarter 20-14, as Dehaas took over the game with attacking the basket, which even includes an and-1 layup. Tyrone had the lead 30-29 going into halftime.

In the 4th quarter, there was constant back and forth action. Hollidaysburg would score, and Tyrone would have an answer. Tyrone’s press led to numerous easy baskets, including Gwinn’s game-tying layup, leaving the score 54-54 for overtime.

In overtime, Hollidaysburg outrebounded Tyrone, which led to their victory.

Tyrone struggled with experience throughout the game; they had only played 1 game prior unlike Hollidaysburg having 3 games under their belt. They hope that more game experience will help in these end of game situations.

“We started out pretty slow, then we finally started to pick it up,” said senior Keegan Gwinn. “The game went well, except we didn’t rebound.”

Tyrone’s JV team won 39-30. The leading scorers include Drew Escala and Dravyn Crowell, both with 12 each, followed by Brady Ronan with 10. The game was close, but they went on an 8-0 run in the 4th quarter to seal the game.
