Senior Landon Hamer and sophomore Drew Irons went yard over the left field wall to lead the Golden Eagles to an 11-4 win over the reigning 2A State Champion Eagles of Bald Eagle.
After scoring just three runs in their season opener against Penns Valley, the Golden Eagles’ bats came to life Wednesday with a 12-hit performance.
Irons got things going with his first career high school home run.
“I kind of got swing-happy at a high pitch but ended up getting enough of the ball for it to leave the park,” Irons said.
Consistency up and down the lineup was the key to victory as every Tyrone starter had a hit, and centerfielder Wyatt Kustenbauder and shortstop Ashton Walk had multiple well-struck line drives.
Innings two, three, and four paved the way for the Tyrone win. The Golden Eagles scored seven runs in those three innings.
Senior Dylan Ewing was on the bump for Tyrone and pitched five complete innings, allowing four runs on six hits.
Ewing struck out five in his first outing of the season.
The defense played near-perfect behind him.
“I trusted my defense and trusted my catcher. That gives us the best chance to win,” Ewing said.
However, the Bald Eagle bats hung with him throughout the game, coupling a two-run second inning with a 2-run homer in the fifth to deal some damage to Ewing’s ERA.
Junior Logan Seeger closed out the game for Ewing, giving up no runs, one hit with two strikeouts in two innings of work.
The Golden Eagles will finish the week against Mount Union on the road on Friday, March 21st, at 4:30 pm.
The Trojans started their season with a 12-2 win against Curwensville on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles will need to continue their balanced attack to improve to 3-0 on the week.
