The Golden Eagles came into their match with Huntingdon with a respectable 2-3 record and a chance to get back up to .500. Standing in their way was a Huntingdon squad with a 3-3 record and a history of beating the Golden Eagles.
“Every year we prepare for Huntingdon and never could pull off with the win,” senior captain Nate Ellenberger said. “This year was much different. The chemistry that we have with this team and the hustle we had that game was just unmatchable. We put a lot of time into the offseason work to prepare for this season, and so far it’s looking like the best one yet.”
Bellwood sophomore Noah Gulvas was up to the challenge with a commanding 4-goal performance to get the 6-4 win over the Bearcats.
“Everything clicked for me that game, but it was definitely a full team effort. Everyone played a part to beat Huntingdon and I’m glad that I was able to do mine,” Gulvas said.
Gulvas started the game off hot with an unassisted goal and then proceeded to put another ball into the back of the net off a Rowan Moore assist all in the first half.
The Bearcats were not going down without a fight as they scored within the first 5 minutes of the second half to chip away at the Eagles’ lead making it 2-1.
But once again Gulvas came up big for the Eagles with another goal to extend the lead to 2 goals and complete the hat trick.
The game continued to go back and forth as the Bearcats shot right back with another goal.
Bellwood senior Jake Baker also scored for the Eagles, to extend their lead to two goals.
Huntingdon then came back with a goal of their own making it 4-3.
The Eagles pulled away after a corner kick from Gulvas leading to a header goal from Rowan Moore, and yet another goal from Gulvas finishing his 4-goal game and extending the lead to 6-3.
In the final minutes, Huntingdon attempted to fight back and scored with less than 30 seconds, but it was too little, too late for the Bearcats, and Tyrone earned the 6-4 win
Tyrone’s JV and JH teams also won over the Bearcats. JV won 2-1, with both goals being scored by junior Ethan Donofrio. The JH team also got a win to complete the sweep of the Bearcats with all 3 Boy’s soccer teams getting a win.
