Gripp Leads Tyrone Into 2021

Tyrone began the season 2-0 with wins over Central and Bellfonte this week.

Tyrone 72. Central 65

The Tyrone Boys Varsity Basketball Team began their season this week at home an almost empty gym with a win over Central, 72-65. Senior Damon Gripp was the leading scorer for Tyrone with 28 points followed by Courtland Rhoades with 12.

Towards the end of the fourth quarter, Gripp got a defensive rebound and passed a couple of defenders to score a 3 pointer and get fouled in the process for a four-point play which allowed the Golden Eagles to gain momentum with a 13 point lead.

“The atmosphere was not nearly as crazy and exciting as it usually is but, the team is just grateful we are getting a chance to play,” said senior Brandon Lucas.

Both teams were back and forth in the first quarter and the Dragons gained a 3 point lead at 17-14.

In the second quarter, Tyrone was able to find more momentum and go on a couple of runs. Tyrone’s pressure on defense allowed for quick turnovers on Central and the Golden Eagles were able to counter ending the half 34-26.

Out of Tyrone’s 11 field goals in the first half 10 of them were three-pointers. Central’s flex zone defense kept Tyrone on the perimeter and wasn’t allowing Tyrone to drive to the basket. Tyrone took advantage of their shooting ability and was able to put up 20 in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Tyrone maintained the lead and gained lots of momentum. Tyrone was able to shut down Central’s offense and kept them at 9 points in the quarter.

“For us seniors this is our last go around. It doesn’t matter if there are fans in the stands we are just going to go out there and play hard each game,” said Lucas.

Tyrone held out and ended with a 72-65 victory in their season opener.

Tyrone 69, Bellefonte 48

In their second game of the week, Tyrone defeated the Bellefonte Red Raiders in a 69-48 on the road Wednesday evening.

The Eagles came out slow in their second game of the season, playing the Red Raiders to an 18 point tie with two minutes left in the first half.

“This is our first game where we had to wear masks, and some guys were having issues breathing, but (Bellefonte) had to wear masks too. It’s just inexcusable the way we came out tonight,” said Tyrone Head Coach George Gripp.

The Golden Eagles played excellent defense, forcing 27 turnovers.

After the slow start, Tyrone began to pull away with a 24-5 run to start the second half.

Tyrone improved to 2-0 and will travel to Loyalsock Township on Saturday to face the 3-0 Lancers.
