Golden Eagles suffer first loss, 48-14 against Central

Tyrone dominated on both sides of the ball

“In the end, they just wanted it more” said Senior lineman Nick Bonsell after a debilitating loss against rival Central. “They came in with a good game plan and we couldn’t stop them from executing it. We could have played a lot better.”

Four total turnovers and only 108 total yards on offense tells the story. A Golden Eagle offense that could not get the ball moving from the second quarter on allowed a high octane Dragon attack to hang a hefty 41 unanswered points on the Golden Eagles. A late score in garbage time brought the final total to 48-14.

Alex Hoenstine continued his dominant performance from the previous week, a seven touchdown effort against Tussey Mountain, with five total scores in the game. On sixteen offensive touches he produced 174 total yards and four rushing touchdowns, adding his final score on a 22 yard fumble recovery.

Quarterback Noah Benton was largely contained by the defense, with the exception of a short touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Star receiver Justin Helsel had a solid night, catching five passes for 65 yards and carrying the ball twice for 17 yards.

Seemingly always confronted with 3rd and long situations early and often, the passing game struggled from the first snap on. Either open receivers were missed or protection broke down, leading to a rough night for starting quarterback Drew Hunter. He completed four of eight passes for only 53 yards. Despite being sacked several times, Hunter added the teams only score in the first half on a quarterback keeper from a few yards out.

The effort on the ground was abysmal as well for Tyrone. They produced a horrific 55 yards on 31 carries for an average of only 1.7 yards a carry. Sophomore Brandon Loose was the team’s leading rusher with 63 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

The Golden Eagles look to bounce back this week as they travel to Huntingdon, a promising squad with a 2-0 early record to begin the season.
