Tyrone has had an up-and-down season to this point, struggling to consistently play up to their potential.
The Golden Eagles have shown flashes throughout the season, as they battled back from a twenty-three-point deficit against the undefeated Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders to make it a one-score game. They’ve also had their fair share of lapses, such as in the Backyard Brawl.
Fortunately, Tyrone is entering a three-game stretch where their opponents have a combined record of 0-21 on the season, which the Golden Eagles can use as an opportunity to get right before the postseason. Huntington was the first of these games, and Tyrone came out with a dominating 32-7 victory.
The first quarter of the contest was a hectic affair. Huntington began the game with the ball, finding success through the air. The Tyrone defense stymied their advancement, and the Bearcats brought out the field goal team for a 37-yard attempt. The kick hung low, and sophomore Kolesen Moore was there for the block. Eli Woomer caught the blocked kick and returned it to the Bearcat 18-yard line.
The Tyrone offense took just one play to score, as Ashton Walk scrambled in for the first of his two rushing touchdowns on the night. Walk ended with four touchdowns on the night.
On the ensuing kickoff, great hits were made on the return man by sophomores Tyler Connelly and Isaiah Suhoney, knocking the ball loose. Tyrone recovered, but the offense was unable to capitalize.
One play later, the chaos continued as the Golden Eagles forced another fumble. Unfortunately, the Tyrone offense was unable to find success and turned the ball over on downs. The Golden Eagle defense still wasn’t done wreaking havoc, as Klayten Moore came up with an interception on the next possession.
The Tyrone offense found a rhythm on their ensuing drive, ending with Walk finding Woomer in the end zone for the score. Following the injury to kicker Dante Novak in the Bishop Guilfoyle game, Tyrone was forced to go for two after each touchdown attempt and was perfect on four two-point attempts.
The second quarter started slowly for both teams. The Tyrone defense continued to impose their will, forcing multiple punts in the quarter. The Tyrone offense continued moving the ball, but a fumble halted their drive. However, on the Golden Eagles’ next offensive possession, Walk found senior Trent Adams darting across the field for a 54-yard touchdown.
The Bearcat offense showed their first signs of life on the last drive of the half, entering Tyrone territory for the first time. The Tyrone defense forced Huntington into a 4th and short scenario, where the Bearcats turned to their bag of tricks for a big play. The Bearcats handed the ball off to a receiver, who pulled up and delivered a 30-yard strike to place the Bearcats at the two-yard line. They scored two plays later and Tyrone entered halftime with a 24-7 lead.
“We did a good job stopping both the run and the pass, and the team was working together really well,” senior Gayge Miller
Tyrone continued their domination in the second half. The defense continued to force turnovers, as both Logan Rumberger and Eli Woomer came down with interceptions. The Tyrone offense mustered up one more rushing touchdown from Walk to put the game out of reach, and Tyrone cruised to a 32-7 victory.
Tyrone plays Central Cambria on Friday at home on Senior Night.
