Tyrone’s season came to its end on Friday night in an unexpected matchup against Bishop Guilfoyle, and the Marauders handed the Golden Eagles a 72-58 loss. With the win, Bishop Guilfoyle moves onto the state playoff.
Brady Ronan reflected on his senior season and the team, saying, “This year meant a lot to me, and this group of guys was special.”
Coming into the postseason, Bishop Guilfoyle was the one seed and the favorite to win the District. With the Golden Eagles coming into the playoffs on a nine-game win streak, both teams had good chances to find their way to the District Six championship.
Eli Woomer led Tyrone in scoring, with eighteen points and three shots made from beyond the arc. Sam Crilly followed with fifteen, and Ashton Walk contributed 11 points.
Bishop Guilfoyle relied heavily on junior Jude Haigh for scoring, as he exploded for a 36-point performance. Junior Trevor Rehm followed him with 15 points to go along with his 15rebounds.
The game began with both teams trading baskets. Four Tyrone players scored early, as Walk led the attack with four points. Rehm and Haigh led Bishop Guilfoyle through the first quarter. The Golden Eagles ended the first quarter with a 17-11 deficit.
Woomer began to get hot in the second quarter, making two three-pointers early in the quarter and finding space underneath for a layup. Crilly capitalized on physical defense from Bishop Guilfoyle, getting to the free-throw line on multiple occasions. Despite this, the Marauders still leaned on Haigh to maintain their lead and go into halftime up 34-27.
“We had to focus on boxing out. They were getting too many offensive rebounds,” junior Ashton Walk said.
Walk had the Golden Eagles going to start the second half, converting on an and one to cut the Bishop Guilfoyle lead to four. Unfortunately, Tyrone went on a cold stretch offensively, and the Marauders took advantage. Going on a 14-3 run, the Marauder lead grew to as much as fifteen. The quarter ended with Tyrone down 54-42 heading into the final quarter.
The Bishop Guilfoyle run continued, and their lead grew to nineteen. Crilly halted the run, converting an and one, as well as sinking a deep mid-range. Woomer made a three, and the Marauder lead was cut down to eleven.
This would be the closest the game would get, and Tyrone would sub out its starters with a minute left in the contest.
Tyrone ends the season 17-8, while Bishop Guilfoyle improves to 22-4.
