The Golden Eagles won the Judge Fred B. Miller Holiday tournament over the Christmas break for the second year in a row under coach Luke Rhoades.
Tyrone had three players named players to the all-tournament team. They were Kendall Lehner, Drew Escala, and senior Sam Crilly who was also named the tournament MVP.
Crilly was the leading scorer of the tournament putting up 29 points against Claysburgh-Kimmel and 13 against Penn Cambria. His stellar defense is what really propelled Tyrone in the right direction in both games. Lehner and Escala each tallied 16 points against Penn cambria in a dominant win.
Tyrone 77, Clayburg-Kimmel 48
The first game for the Golden Eagles against Claysburg-Kimmel was a blowout in a 77-48 win.
The single A Bulldogs were no match for the depth of the Tyrone bench. The Golden Eagle full-court press was in full effect the entire game and it resulted in multiple turnovers that led to easy fast-break layups for Tyrone.
Sam Crilly led the Golden Eagles with 29 points, including 5 three-pointers, and Kendall Lehner added 22 points.
Brayden Haney was the leading scorer for Claysburg with 25 points.
By the end of the second quarter, the game was already getting out of hand and Coach Rhoades was able to get some younger guys in the game for much of the second half and give the starters some rest for the championship game the following day.
Tyrone 77, Penn Cambria 43
Coming into the Holiday Tournament Championship, Tyrone was undefeated at 6-0 and Penn Cambria who snuck out a win against Bellwood were 3-3.
Last season Tyrone defeated the Panthers in the Holliday tournament championship in a close-fought 77-67 win. This season the Golden Eagles came out with another win over the Panthers and did it in high-scoring fashion with a 77-43 victory.
Kendall Lehner and Drew Escala were the leading scorers of the contest with 16 points and Sam Crilly followed them up with 13 of his own. The unsung hero of the game was Ashton Walk who grabbed multiple rebounds, found open shooters in tough spots to tally assists, and played stellar defense.
Penn Cambria’s Brandon Rabish, who normally puts up over 20 points a game, was held to 14. No Panther player scored over 6 points in the contest except Rabish.
Tyrone once again flexed their speed and defensive prowess by playing a full-court press and forcing Penn Cambria into a panic early on in the game.
The Golden Eagles were able to get a more than comfortable lead going into halftime and coming out of the break were able to put in more depth to give starters a rest.
With prior history to football, Penn Cambria and Tyrone have some bad blood between each other and showed it on the court. A couple of unnecessary fouls and skirmishes happened between the two teams.
By the end of the fourth quarter, both teams had their bench players in the game as Tyrone closed the game out with a large margin victory and lengthened their undefeated streak to 7-0.
