Tyrone went into New Paris to take on the Chestnut Ridge Lions with the determination to win and avoid playing number one-seeded Penn Cambria in the first round of district playoffs.
The win came harder than expected for Tyrone. The game was ultimately decided in the last 2 minutes left in the game when Tyrone’s Eli Woomer was able to get a finger on a Chestnut Ridge PAT attempt and block it, preserving Tyrone’s lead by one point.
The Lion’s offense led by running back Haydan Webb who accumulated 316 total yards of offense and scored 28 points in just the first half.
The Golden Eagles had a phenomenal offensive night as well, putting up 454 total yards of offense and scoring 35 points.
Ashton Walk led the passing attack with 299 yards, spreading the ball around to five different receivers.
When asked about what led to his success on Friday, Walk said, “My offensive line gave me time and my receivers were getting open early. It makes it easy for me when my guys make important plays like that.”
Tyrone’s rushing game was dominated by Seth Hoover who accumulated 100 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Hoover has his sights on the 1000-yard rushing achievement, as he only needs 83 more yards.
“Our offense was moving the ball all game, we were only forced to punt one time and other than that we were unstoppable,” senior Cian Hockenberry said.
Chestnut Ridge started the game strong with a long drive down the field that resulted in a touchdown and an immediate lead for the Lions.
The explosive Tyrone offense quickly responded with a quick touchdown on a Ashton Walk connection to Trent Adams to tie the contest.
Two more touchdowns were traded in the first quarter along with a missed PAT for Tyrone that gave Chestnut Ridge the lead to close out the first quarter.
The second quarter featured much of the same. Both defenses were struggling to force a stop or turnover which resulted in a 21-20 score with a few minutes to spare in the first half.
Hayden Webb was able to take the Lions down the field once again and punch the ball in for the score and the 28-20 lead going into the half.
“We had to step it up on defense in order to come out of there with a win, all we had to do was tackle #40 low and get 11 hats to the ball”, junior Marshall Martin.
Tyrone came out of the halftime break determined.
They drove down the field and chewed several minutes off the clock as Seth Hoover broke a 29 yard run for a touchdown. A fake field goal pass was then converted to Tyler Weston to tie the game at 28-28.
The Golden Eagle defense got their first stop of the night and forced a punt. The Tyrone offense did not take it for granted as Ashton Walk found Tyler Weston for a 20 yard touchdown and the one score lead with 5 minutes to go in the game.
Chestnut Ridge drove down the field once again and scored.
As the Lions got lined up to punch in the PAT and tie the game, Eli Woomer got a good jump on the ball and was able to get a finger on the ball that ultimately affected the trajectory of the kick and knocked it down.
Tyrone’s special teams then recovered the onside kick attempt and the Golden Eagle offensive line made a couple holes for Seth Hoover to grab a first down and close out the game at 35-34.
This win was huge for Tyrone’s playoff hopes, the 6-4 Golden Eagles are now taking on number 2 seeded 6-4 Forest Hills Rangers at G.H Memorial Field on Friday 11/1 at 7 pm in the District Semi-finals.
A win against the Rangers will put them in the District Championship and give them a chance to make the state playoffs.
