Tyrone struggled on Friday night against BEA with just 212 yards of total offense and 12 offensive points. Not usually a recipe for success in high school football.
But fortunately for the Golden Eagles, the defense played lights out, only allowing 14 points and forcing four turnovers – all interceptions, with one going for a touchdown. The Golden Eagles got one interception each from Mason Emigh, Owen Oakes, Kyler Suhoney, and the game-sealer from Caleb Whitby.
“Coach Wilson had a really good game plan heading into the game, we were prepared for everything, we executed and made things happen when we had to,” senior lineman John Stanton said.
Tyrone jumped out to a 14-0 lead with an 80-yard touchdown reception from Brayden Parsons and an interception returned for a touchdown by Suhoney.
Bald Eagle responded late in the second quarter with a touchdown reception from Jackson Millward. This concluded the half with Tyrone leading 14-7.
“We weren’t playing our game. We knew that we had to regroup in the locker room and fix our mistakes,” said senior quarterback Eli Woomer.
On the first play of the second half, Owen Oakes intercepted a pass from Kaleb Iron and the Tyrone offense took full advantage of the opportunity. Ashton Emigh punched in the touchdown from one yard out to make the score 21-7.
Bald Eagle responded to this with a long drive that ended in a tight end pop pass touchdown to James Cowan, keeping the game tight.
But for the remainder of the game, neither team could get anything going on offense. Whenever Tyrone had an opportunity to score, they fumbled the ball away.
With less than a minute to go, Caleb Whitby was able to come down with a crucial interception that let the Golden Eagles take a knee and close the game out with a win.
Tyrone improved their record to 3-1. Next week, they will take on the 2-2 Bellwood-Antis Blue Devils in the annual backyard brawl at Grey-Veterans Memorial Field.
