Lucas Leads Tyrone to Victory

The Tyrone Golden Eagles picked up their first win of the year Friday night as they defeated Bishop Carroll 28-20. Junior quarterback Brandon Lucas led the Eagles with four touchdowns. Tyrone’s offense made plays when needed and their defense showed up for the game winning stop.

“It feels great to get back in the win column. We never gave up and fought hard the whole game and were able to come up with the big plays when we needed to and secure the win,” said Lucas.

The first quarter was sloppy for both teams with both forcing multiple turnovers. As the first quarter was winding down Tyrone broke the scoreless tie when Brandon Lucas trudged through the line for a 2 yard touchdown run giving Tyrone a 7-0 lead with 1:07 left in the first quarter.

Bishop Carroll cut Tyrone’s lead early in the second quarter when they scored on a 13 yard touchdown pass from Dumm Tom Novak. Tyrone led 7-6 with 8:35 left in the first half after BC missed an extra point.

BC took the lead with 2:44 left in the half when Dumm connected to Zazvrskey from 41 yards out taking a 12-6 lead after another missed extra point. Tyrone retook the lead with just under a minute remaining when Brandon Lucas punched through the line scoring from 2 yards out for his second touchdown of the game. With the score Tyrone took a 14-12 lead going into the half.

Tyrone’s offense picked right back off where they left off to start the second half. They kept the pedal to the ground expanding their lead to 21-12 when Brandon Lucas found Noah Zimmerman for a 6 yard TD pass. The score was Zimmerman’s first of the game and the third for Lucas.

BC cut into Tyrone’s lead less than three minutes later on a 6 yard run by Farabaugh. After a failed two point conversion Tyrone still held a three point 21-18 lead. Both teams held the others offense silent for the rest of the quarter keeping the game 21-18 after three quarters.

Tyrone scored again early in the fourth quarter when Lucas connected with Damon Gripp from 18 yards out for his 4th touchdown of the game. Tyrone took a 28-18 lead when Keegan Raabe’s kick soared through the uprights.

“We definitely have to work on our open field tackling, that was not good against them. We also have to run to the ball better. It’s a philosophy of our program and yet we’re not doing it nearly as well as we need to,” said Tyrone Head Coach John Franco.

BC cut the lead once again when they got a safety cutting Tyrone’s lead to 28-20 with 3:49 remaining in the game. BC got the ball back at the Tyrone 40 with under a minute left but Damon Gripp picked off the BC QB winning the game for Tyrone.

With the win Tyrone moves to 1-2 on the season, they look to pick up their first Mountain League win of the year when they welcome PO to Grays Field this Friday.
