The last three meetings between Bald Eagle and Tyrone have gone in the BEA win column, and this year Bald Eagle came to Tyrone as the favorite to make it four in a row.
However, in a back-and-forth game that featured several lead changes, the Golden Eagles stunned the 2A powerhouse with a 35-28 win in overtime.
Bald Eagle started strong, marching down the field on their first possession for a score on a seven-yard run from junior Carnell Noone.
Noone was an issue all night for the Golden Eagle defense, ending with 140 yards from scrimmage and two scores.
The Tyrone offense responded with an efficient eight-play scoring drive, capped off by a six yard touchdown pass from Ashton Walk to Trent Adams.
Adams returned to the starting lineup following a two-game absence due to injury and was a standout for Tyrone with 9 catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
The next drive the Golden Eagle defense forced a punt and set the offense up in great field position. The offense capitalized, as Walk found Klayten Moore from nine yards out for his second touchdown pass of the half. Tyrone held a 14-6 lead with eight minutes left in the second quarter.
The Tyrone defense then forced another punt, but were quickly back on the field following an interception. The Bald Eagle offense started their drive on the Tyrone eight yard line, and took just one play to score.
Both defenses stood strong to end the quarter, and the score was knotted at 14-14 entering the second half.
“The first half set the tone for the game, we showed them that we came to play and they weren’t going to walk out with an easy win,” senior Cian Hockenberry said.
Tyrone started the second half with the ball, but their drive halted after a fumble. Bald Eagle took advantage, as Noone found the end zone for the second time.
Both defenses anchored down for most of the third quarter. Tyrone was turned away twice on fourth and short opportunities, but the defense stood strong. With three minutes to go in the quarter, senior Ian Gibbons broke through the line and blocked the Bald Eagle punt attempt.
Looking to score, the Tyrone offense turned to the running game. The offensive line paved the way for Seth Hoover, who marched down to the Bald Eagle six yard line after receiving six straight carries.
Junior Marshall Martin tied the score at twenty-one following his six yard touchdown reception.
Bald Eagle answered with an eleven play drive, and quarterback Carson Nagle scrambled in for the score with just under six minutes left in the contest. Tyrone was forced to punt on their ensuing drive, but got the ball back with two minutes to go.
Tyrone marched down the field and Walk connected with Adams once again for the score. Tyrone elected for an extra point, and the game went into overtime.
The Golden Eagles received the ball first, and Hoover needed just one play to find the endzone on a 10 yard run.
On Bald Eagle’s overtime possession, Nagle tried to get the ball back in the hands of Noone, but the pitch was muffed and Tyrone Junior Caden Harris was first to the ball, securing the overtime win for the Golden Eagles.
Walk also set a new school record for career touchdown passes with his 65th career touchdown pass. Walk is also expected to break the career passing yards record soon.
Tyrone and Bald Eagle are both now 2-2 on the season. Tyrone travels to Bellwood-Antis for the Annual “Backyard Brawl” this week.
