Golden Eagle Baseball Opens with 3-1 Win at Hollidaysburg
The defending state champs got off to a good start Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 conference win against a quality opponent, the Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers.
The game was scoreless through 2 ½ innings of play when the Golden Tigers got on the board first with their lone run off of a passed ball from Tyrone starter Ross Gampe.
Tyrone’s pitching was outstanding, holding the Tigers to just one unearned run on one hit between starter Ross Gampe and reliever Aiden Coleman, who got the win.
The pair also combined to strike out a combined 11 batters (Gampe had five and Coleman had 6 strikeouts).
“I felt that I did pretty well for my first start of the year, though there is definitely things that I have to improve on like the amount of walks and the pitch count,” said Gampe.
The Golden Eagles tied the game in the top of the 5th inning on an RBI fielder’s choice by senior Cortlynd Rhodes.
Tyrone got their two other runs in the top of the 6th inning off a misplayed ball hit by David Lang. The Golden Eagle offense took advantage of the error to score 2 of their 3 runs.
The Eagle’s bats spread 6 hits across seven innings and even though they got the win, there are many improvements to be made in the team’s offense.
The Golden Eagles are back in action tonight at home vs. Juniata Valley at 4:30 pm.
