The Tyrone Lady Eagles gave themselves a present during the Fred B. Miller Holiday Tournament, winning the championship by going 2-0 against Bellwood and Penn Cambria.
Tyrone defeated Bellwood 50-38 in the first round before beating Penn Cambria 56-50 in the Championship game.
Junior Laney Woomer was named the tournament MVP, while senior Alayna Greene also made the all-tournament team.
Against Bellwood, the team’s main focus was to play at their tempo starting with their press and executing their offenses by taking quality shots.
The score at the end of the first quarter was 13-9, Tyrone. At halftime, it was tied 20-20.
Junior Claire Lehman said a couple of minor adjustments coming out of halftime made a big difference.
“I would say moving the ball to get good shots up, and staying straight up on Lily Gewert were the biggest things coming out of halftime that we need to improve on to take the win,” said Lehman.
The third quarter ended with Tyrone taking the lead 36-22. B-A cut into the lead in the fourth quarter but the Lady Eagles pulled away thanks to 16 points in the final frame from Laney Woomer, who scored 22 in all.
The next night in the finals, the Lady Eagles dialed in and did what it took to win the Championship.
Head Coach Mike Whitling said the Lady Eagles grew as a team during the Penn Cambria game.
“Against Penn Cambria, we did a great job at controlling the pace of play and working through a lot of adversity. We built a ton of resilience in this game which is indicative of our growth, said Whitling.
At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles were in the lead with a score of 15-9, but the Lady Panthers rallied to go ahead by one at halftime.
Junior Rylan Crowell said coming out of halftime she knew that the team needed to work together and “execute both offensively and defensively. Overall, we just had to keep performing,” said Crowell.
Coming out of the third quarter, the score was tied 40-40. With a big quarter coming up, trying to take the final lead, the Lady Eagles took the win 56-50.
Brielle Parker said the Lady Eagles learned something about themselves.
“It was such a great feeling when we won because it showed that our hard work paid off and that we can play with and win against tough teams,” said Parker.
