Girl Scouts and Goodwill Team Up to “Give A Little Love”

Third grade Girl Scout Emma Ellenberger is one of thirteen girls in her troop who are teaming up with Goodwill for the “Give A Little Love” clothing donation drive.

“I feel very good we are able to help,” said Ellenberger, “If we didn’t give back to people who are in need, they would not be able to get help from anyone else.”

The Girl Scouts of Troop 39829 are collecting gently used items to donate to Goodwill stores of Southwestern Pennsylvania from now until Thursday, February 28th.

The collected goods will be distributed to 25 Goodwill retail stores to provide education and job training to individuals with barriers to employment.

February is typically a slow month for Goodwill stores, and the Girl Scouts hope that “Give A Little Love” donation drive will change that.

Tyrone students and staff who would like to donate items should see any member of Tyrone Troop 39829 or contact Mrs. Jessica Ellenberger in the high school to arrange a time and place for collection.  Her email is [email protected].

According to Girl Scouts spokeswoman Stefanie Marshall, the scouts collected about 30,000 pounds of clothing in 2017, and they hope to meet or exceed that amount this year.

Acceptable items include clothing, shoes, accessories, kitchenware, dishes, pans, knick-knacks, decorative items, books, records, DVDs, CDs, cassettes, small household appliances and tools, computers, computer accessories, and copiers and fax machines.

The two scouts that collect the most items will win a paid trip to Girl Scout Camp courtesy of Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

All the Girl Scouts who participate in the project have the opportunity to earn a Goodwill patch to recognize their commitment and dedication to their community. Each Girl Scout must collect a minimum of five bags to receive a patch.

Fourth grader and Girl Scout Sarah Chichester is also very grateful to have the opportunity to participate in the donation drive.

“It feels really good [to be able to help],” said Chichester, “Other people need more than they already have. I want to make them happy.”
