Game, set, match: 2014 boys tennis preview
The 2014 boys tennis team is hoping to improve on their 0-8 record from last season.
The team has a very rough schedule against teams from much larger schools who are power houses with depth.
Tyrone’s boys tennis team has only five players, using every player for their five matches.
“We’re not going to be as bad as last season,” said senior captain Ryan Cox.
Cox received three loves last year, and scored a combined 16 points on the season.
The rest of the team is junior Eric Hull, junior Kyle Oldro, junior Thomas Williams, and junior Ben Wolfe.
“I think Ryan will do pretty well, but he has a tough task playing in the number one spot,” said head coach Randy Irvin, “he will face some of the best players opposing schools have to offer.”
“We want to improve from our first match of the season until our last,” said coach Irvin.
The team is set with four new players, Thomas Williams, Kyle Oldro, Ben Wolfe, and Eric Hull. They have nowhere to go but up.
When asked how the tennis team was going to fair this year Alternative Captain and Junior Ben Wolfe had this to say, “their ace is grass, and we’re the mowers.”
The number one slot for team doubles this year is Ryan Cox and Thomas Williams, and the number two spot is filled with Kyle Oldro and Ben Wolfe.
“They are improving every match that we play,” remarked coach Irvin.
They have two big matches coming up against mountain league rivals the Clearfield Bisons and Huntington Bearcats.
