Fifth annual Freedom Ride USA charity bike ride to be held in Tyrone July 4

The fifth annual Freedom Ride USA charity bike ride will be held on the morning of the July 4, 2015 in Tyrone.  All of the proceeds raised from this 10 mile ride for charity support veterans at the James E. Van Zandt Veteran’s Hospital in Altoona.

In its five years of existence, the Freedom Ride has raised over $21,000 for area veterans.

According to its website, the mission of the Freedom Ride is “to celebrate our freedom by coming together to ride free and proudly showing support for our great country and the men and women who have served to protect our freedom.”

This idea for the ride came in 2011 from a group of seven friends from Tyrone, Bellwood, and Altoona. They wanted to put together a fun 4th of July bike ride to thank the veterans and have a fun community event.

The ride is approximately 10 miles long and will begin and end at the Tyrone American Legion. There will be two water stops along the route.  According to organizers, the route will avoid major hills so the ride can be enjoyed by all.

“We know how any USA themed event at Tyrone is a hit, especially with the high school kids, so Freedom Ride would like to challenge as many of the ‘younger’ generation to get involved by dressing up and joining the ride in support of the area’s many veterans,” said Freedom Ride President Doug Roseberry.

The entry fee is $20 per adult and $10 per child rider, which includes a t-shirt and food at the after party picnic.

There will be prizes for best dressed, best decorated bike, oldest rider, youngest rider, and most family members riding in the Freedom Ride.
