Tyrone led the 2-1 visiting Clearfield Bison by nine points at halftime, but foul trouble and cold shooting at the line for the Lady Eagles let Clearfield come back to claim a 62-54 win against Tyrone at home.
“I think we played hard and did our best, but the foul trouble killed us. We will get them next time,” Tyrone junior Laney Woomer said after the game.
Senior Alayna Greene scored Tyrone’s first point at the free-throw line. Initially, both teams had trouble making their shots fall and the game was tied 5-5 until the last 1:40 in the first quarter when Clearfield went on a seven-point run.
The quarter ended 12-9 in Clearfield’s favor.
At the start of the second quarter, Tyrone’s Elise Volders tied the game with a 3-point shot. Alayna Woomer and Claire Lehman also connected from outside the arc to give the Lady Eagles a 6-point lead.
Tyrone would extend their lead to 9 at the end of the first half, 34-25.
However, multiple girls from both teams ended the first half in foul trouble.
The Lady Eagles opened the second half with a steal, but a quick turnover led to another foul.
Things were looking up for the Lady Eagles when junior Grace Naylor came in for players in foul trouble and hit a 3-point shot right off the bat.
However, a change in Clearfield’s defense put the Lady Eagles back on the ropes.
The Lady Eagles were trying to run the clock and not take quick shots to maintain their 8-point lead when Clearfield began to press, trying to get steals and fast breaks. This forced the Lady Eagles to make quick passes and run the court.
Tyrone lost their lead toward the end of the third quarter with Clearfield gaining most of their points on the foul line.
The third quarter ended with the Lady Bison in the lead 45-42, but Tyrone seemed determined to win back the lead.
At the start of the last quarter, Claire Lehman scored off of a left-handed drive to the hoop.
However, the Lady Eagles continued to foul and give Clearfield foul shots.
When Tyrone did earn trips to the free throw line, they could not take advantage, going 0 for 4 from the line.
Three of the Lady Eagles’ starting players fouled out and with a minute left in the game, the Lady Eagles were down by 4.
Tyrone had to make quick fouls to gain the possession back and try to win the game, but Clearfield widened their lead with another layup to beat Tyrone 62-56
Alayna Woomer was Tyrone’s leading scorer with 12 points, while Alayna Greene was right behind her with 11.
