The Tyrone Area FFA Chapter recently assisted the Heaven Scent Search and Rescue canine training group by preparing scent trails, assisting trainers in keeping the dogs focused. They also served as mock missing persons for the bloodhounds.
This hands-on experience allowed students to gain insights into search and rescue operations and the vital role well-trained canines play in emergencies.
“We walked along the fence for our trail; however, the wind carried our scent farther away. It was fascinating to see how the wind influenced the dogs’ work,” junior Aubrey Biter said.
The two-day training event began on Saturday, September 8, in Tyrone, where participants tackled cold trails that had been laid on Thursday evening and hot trails laid that morning. The training continued on Sunday, September 7, in Bellwood, with members navigating hot trails from a designated starting point to their destinations that morning.
Members crafted scent articles for the canines to identify, which served as the basis for their search tasks. These objects included everyday items such as pencils, pens, hair ties, paper towels, tissues, and bottle caps.
The Tyrone Area FFA Chapter’s involvement not only supported a vital search and rescue organization but also fostered valuable skills and a sense of civic responsibility among its members.
“This helps with their mission by providing essential training for dogs that are not fully trained and those returning to duty. Each rescue presents unique challenges, and this training prepares them for various situations, including different weather conditions and how individuals are placed out,” junior John Eaken said.
Through their participation, the FFA members are not only contributing to a noble cause but also growing into responsible and community-minded individuals.
