The Tyrone Area FFA welcomed 1,149 visitors to their Ag Education tent at the 41st annual Farm City Day in downtown Tyrone on Saturday, September 14.
The FFA students were there to engage children in activities, spark their interest in the role agriculture plays in the community, and inspire young people to consider careers in agriculture-related fields.
Tyrone freshman Elias Hunter was one of the many TAHS FFA members to volunteer at the event.
“Farm City Day promotes the importance of agriculture in our community and allows people to understand how agriculture has helped us out in so many ways,” Hunter said.
Visitors to the FFA tent enjoyed various activities, including a trivia wheel, UV ray bracelet making, and learning about personal protective equipment.
Attendees also had the chance to interact with farm animals, including Stella the Guernsey cow, and four Katahdin sheep named Pickles, Evie, Daisy, and Tae.
The FFA members taught the children about the animals, their benefits to the environment, and how to care for them.
“Farm City Day is important because it allows people to come together as a community and learn about agriculture, and even sell products they have made,” Ag Education program senior Kylee Nelson said.
Farm City Day was organized by the Rotary Club of Tyrone and featured local food trucks, vendors, and entertainment.
Representatives from the Blair County Farm Bureau, Sheetz Fellows Program, Penn State Pesticide Education, Centre County Dairy Promotions, and Huntingdon County Fair Queen Ambassadors were also at the event, enhancing the community experience.
