Although the scoreboard indicated a 20-point Tyrone win, Bishop McCort kept the game close throughout the first half before Tyrone took over in the second for a 79-59 win on McCort’s home gym in Johnstown on Friday, January 17.
The duo of Sam Crilly and Andrew Escala led the Golden Eagles in scoring with Crilly having 21 and Escala having 17.
Throughout the first quarter, the Golden Eagles’ offense was stagnant, taking just a 17-14 lead at the end of the quarter.
The physicality and toughness of Bishop McCort made it difficult for Tyrone to gather rebounds and loose balls.
“McCort gave us the toughest size disadvantage so far this year and their hustle to get loose balls helped them stay in the game,” senior Kendall Lehner said.
Throughout the rest of the first half, it stayed close.
Junior Ashton Emigh then came off the bench for Tyrone to provide some much-needed offense, scoring 12.
“I knew that we needed a spark at that point so when I went in I became the spark we needed,” Emigh said.
At the end of the first half, Tyrone was up by just two points, 33-31.
After a halftime talk, the Eagles went into the third quarter and dominated, scoring 29 points to McCorts 15, putting a more comfortable 16-point gap between themselves and the Crushers.
“After we came out after halftime we started clicking together and the box score reflected it,” senior Andrew Escala said.
Tyrone outscored the Crushers 17-13 in the fourth quarter to take the 20-point win.
Tyrone improved their record to 10-2 and McCort fell to 9-5.
