Tyrone was able to survive a 25-point rally by Williamsport, and came out on top of a 63-60 thriller.
It was the tale of two halves as Tyrone dominated the first half 44-18, and Williamsport countered by dominating the second half 41-19.
Junior Sam Crilly scored a career-high 29 points in the win, as he caught fire from beyond the arc and made 7 three-pointers. Sophomore Eli Woomer also found success from deep, draining 4 shots from beyond the arc on his way to an 18-point performance.
Both Crilly and Woomer got going early in the contest, accounting for 15 of Tyrone’s first 19 points. The Golden Eagles ended the first quarter on a high note, as senior Brady Ronan converted an and-one to give Tyrone a 22-11 lead.
The second quarter began with both teams trading shots, followed by a 3-minute stretch where neither team scored. Tyrone ended the quarter strong though, with Sam Crilly and Eli Woomer each hitting two three-pointers. The Golden Eagles entered the half with a 44-19 lead after a halfcourt buzzer-beater.
The second half would prove to be a much different story, though. The nearly flawless Tyrone team that built their first-half lead was now gone, as the Golden Eagles began carelessly turning the ball over.
“Our defense struggled, and we couldn’t hit anything,” said senior Dravyn Crowell.
This resulted in extra offensive possessions for Williamsport, who took advantage and went on a 16-0 run.
Tyrone’s advantage was once twenty-five points was down to just eight as the Golden Eagles looked to hang on to their 49-41 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Williamsport continued to find offensive success to begin the fourth quarter, cutting the Tyrone lead to just one. The Tyrone offense turned to Crilly to close out the contest. Crilly scored all of Tyrone’s final twelve points, making two three-pointers and knocking down all of his free throws to secure the win for Tyrone.
When asked about the performance, Crilly said, “We were able to get out in transition and my teammates did a great job of finding me for open looks.”
The win moves Tyrone to 9-6 on the year, while Williamsport falls to 3-10.
