Eagles Soar past the Rams
Alex Weaver scored 16 points, and Dylan Thomas connected on four 3-pointers en route to 15 points as Tyrone defeated Penns Valley 56-38 in a Mountain League match-up Friday night.
Tyrone’s victory was all due to their transition game and how well they shared the ball. Four Tyrone starters were in double digits for the second time in the last three games, and in the closing minutes of the game the Eagles were pushing the ball and getting to the hoop at will to secure the victory.
“I was really happy with what I saw tonight. This is a very difficult place to get a win and our guys got the job done,” said head coach George Gripp on the victory.
The first quarter was all Eagles. As Penns Valley sat back in there 2-3 zone, the Eagles were making shots at ease and jumped out to a 16-6 lead.
The second was a little slower than Tyrone would have liked. The Rams changed to a man defense, but they also went back to their slow style offense. This caused the Eagles to not be able to push as much as they liked. At the end of the second, Tyrone lead 25-16.
Alex Weaver played a big role for the Eagles as he lead in scoring and rebounding. Weaver has really stepped up in the recent weeks and hopes to continue his success.
“I owe it to my team. Basketball is a team sport and that’s how we have been playing as of late,” said senior Alex Weaver.
Coming out of the half the Rams were on a mission. They scored the first three baskets of the second half and shortened the Eagles lead. Fortunately for Tyrone, they came out of a timeout, kept their composure and still had the lead after the third.
The fourth was again all Eagles. They dominated in every aspect of the game especially defense. Tyrone scored seventeen in the quarter and the defense held Penns Valley to only five.
As of late the Eagles have been playing great defense late in games when it is needed. Could this be the reason for their current three game win streak? The players seem to think so.
“I love defense. Everyone know that it has always been the motor and always will be,” said Junior Jake Meredith.
The Golden Eagles won the game 56-38 on Friday, keeping their hope alive for a league title. They improve to 8-3 on the season and hope to extend their win streak on Tuesday when they travel to Philipsburg to take on the Mounties.
