Despite a cold first quarter for the Golden Eagles, the ability to keep composure and maintain leadership tells the tale for the rest of the 85-54 rout of the Bearcats.
Tyrone’s senior leadership has been outstanding thus far into the season and it showed last night on the stat sheet where the four starting seniors combined for 66 of the Golden Eagles 85 points and were responsible for 30 of the team’s 50 rebounds.
Senior Andrew Escala stepped up throughout the game whenever the Eagles had difficulty shooting the outside shot.
Escala went 4 for 5 from around the arc, finishing the game with a career-high 29 points.
“It felt good to get shots going in again, and I’m glad to be a big contributor to the victory,” said Escala.
Also scoring in double figures were seniors Kendall Lehner and Ashton Walk with 13 a piece, and senior Sam Crilly with 11 points.
Another key factor in the Golden Eagles’ success was offensive rebounding, where Tyrone outrebounded Huntingdon 21:7 offensively and 50:32 overall.
“Defense has been our main focus all year, and it paid off when our offense wasn’t as effective,” junior Eli Woomer said.
While the Bearcats focused on slowing the pace down in transition, it didn’t stop the Golden Eagles from dominating offensively. They went on to score 12 second-chance points, and added 23 points off of turnovers that eventually opened up the Huntington defense, and allowed for many high-percentage looks in transition.
The Golden Eagles continued offensive dominance throughout the game scoring 46 points in the second half to extend the lead into the mercy clock.
The Golden Eagles go to 8-0 with the win.
