Eagles fall to Mounties on controversial non-call in 2OT
Philipsburg wins on controversial goal in 2 OT
Weather was not an issue last night, but there was a torrential flow of goals in Tyrone.
Tyrone faced Philipsburg in a Mountain League matchup that is always classic. Unfortunately, Tyrone dropped the game 4-3 in double overtime.
Five minutes into the game Philipsburg’s Austin Krise burned the Tyrone defense down the sideline for an easy goal.
Tyrone showed resilience and pushed back to score a minute later. Sophomore Aaron Andrews sent Noah D’Angelo into the box with a perfect pass and D’Angelo converted.
Minutes later with the game tied D’Angelo made a simple cut from 18 yards out and put his shot on net. The ball bounced right to the keeper, but the shot was powerful enough to fly right through the keeper’s legs.
Tyrone led 2-1 only eight minutes into the game.
Tyrone didn’t seem to let up but Philipsburg was able to squeeze in another goal off a miraculous touch from Krise. Krise beat the Tyrone defense to an airborne crossing ball and sent it into the upper left corner of the goal.
Before the half ended Krise put in another goal from a through ball. With his speed he beat the Tyrone defense and a simple cut propelled the ball into the net past Tyrone’s keeper, Anthony Politza.
Tyrone’s offense was working the ball very well despite the shaky defense and got several shots off by way of Bellwood senior Amado Cordozo. D’Angelo was in the perfect position when Amado Cordozo shot next. The ball bounced away from the keeper and D’Angelo sent the ball into white nylon.
Tyrone desperately tried to score another goal in regulation time but was unsuccessful and the game went into OT tied 3-3.
In the first overtime Tyrone and Philipsburg both were very unproductive as neither was able to get decent shots off. Neither team scored and Tyrone went into double OT for the first time this season.
Ball movement kept the game interesting as both teams found space around the field.
Philipsburg had the ball 18 yards out when Krise got the ball once again. Krise touched the ball past Tyrone centerback Eric Hartsock and chased after it.
However, Eric positioned himself in front of Krise to defend the ball. Krise’s momentum and extended arm pushed him through Hartsock who fell to the ground. Krise found himself completely unguarded 10 yards from the goal and easily scored his fourth goal of the night.
Tyrone’s defense was stuck in their tracks as the game ended unbelievably.
“I can’t believe [the referee] didn’t see or call that!” complained Coach Miller.
“He had the whistle in his mouth!” exclaimed several of Tyrone’s players.
The clear foul that was not called cost Tyrone an important game as they fight for the Mountain League and a spot in the playoffs.
Tyrone travels to Central Tuesday, October 6th, in search for another conference win.
