The Golden Eagles knew playing at home against Hollidaysburg would be tough, but after losing at home to Bishop Guilfoyle on January 10 and at Central on January 11, Tyrone saw this as an opportunity to prove to critics that they could win a big game.
Unfortunately, despite being up by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, Tyrone was unable to hold off the Golden Tigers and came up just two points short, losing 65-63.
“I think this game showed us a lot of what we need to fix for the future to take that step up and become a great team instead of a good team,” senior Landon Hamer said.
The game was tied at 12 after one quarter, but Tyrone came out in the second firing on all cylinders, pushing their lead to 11, making the score 29-18 Tyrone going into the half.
Tyrone came out of the half doing well, maintaining their lead. Junior Eli Woomer hit back-to-back threes on two possessions to give the Golden Eagles a 15-point lead with 5:00 minutes left in the third quarter.
Then Hollidaysburg Junior Kasen Metzger hit a mid-range shot to spark Hollidaysburg’s run, and after a few bad turnovers and fouls from Tyrone, the Tigers were back in the game.
Going into the fourth quarter the two teams were tied at 45-45, but Tyrone lost all of its momentum due to the Tiger’s big third quarter and their ability to execute their offense. The Tigers went on a 10-3 run at the start of the quarter.
The Golden Eagles could not hit a shot until senior Sam Crilly was fouled on a field goal and completed the traditional three-point play to put Tyrone to within four points.
However, the Tigers slowed the game down with a four-point lead that held until Crilly was fouled on a three-point shot attempt. Crilly was clutch on the foul line, making all three free throws to put the Golden Eagles within three points of the lead.
Tyrone brought the score down to 64-63 until the Tigers hit another free throw to seal the game up 65-63.
The loss means that the Golden Eagles’ search for a signature win will have to wait at least a little longer, but they remain confident in their ability to win.
Tyrone’s record is currently 10-3 and Hollidaysburg up to 12-2.
