Eagles down the Bearcats 42-36 in Mountain League matchup

Despite the fact that Huntingdon already had four Mountain League losses, including one to the Eagles, Tyrone was determined not to overlook the Bearcats this Wednesday.

Earlier this season the Eagles beat the Bearcats by a score of 74-69 in a close game and Wednesday’s game played out in a similar fashion.

The first quarter featured tough defense from both teams, each keeping the other under seven points with Huntingdon leading 6-5 after one period.

Big man Preston “Diddy” Mitchell was the hero of the first half, scoring six of Tyrone’s 10 points in the second. Mitchell went 3-3 for shooting with two down low lay ups and one huge jumper from about 11 feet out.

“Tonight was a big win for us as we hold on to the Mountain League,” said Mitchell. “Anytime you can travel to Huntingdon and get a win it’s a pretty good feeling. It’s hard to win down there.”

The Eagles kept Huntingdon’s Nate Gearhart under control by limiting him to 13 points and stopping his inside game.

Pooky Soellner led the Eagles in scoring with 16 points, including three 3-point shots and two inside shots.

Soellner stepped up and nailed a 3-4 foul shots late and really helped put the close game away for the Eagles with a final score of 42-36.

“We were energized and managed to keep Gearhart under control,” said Soellner.”We hit shots when shots were needed.”

“It was a tough start this game, but we had players step up and make shots when needed”, said Head Coach George Gripp, “hitting shots when needed has been our calling card all season.”

The Eagles have a very important game against Clearfield on Friday the 30th.  Clearfield gave Tyrone their first loss of the season and the Eagles will be looking for some revenge at home. Tipoff is at 7:00pm
