Eagle Eye online newspaper grows as year moves on
In the last few months the Tyrone Eagle Eye News has become more popular than ever.
Data from Google Analytics on vistors and page views show that the small town online newspaper has not only become a renowned way for Tyrone High School students to get involved in the news of the school and community, but has aspired to be a well known website all throughout the area.
Halfway through the year, the Eagle Eye has already suprassed their readership goal for the year. As tracked on Google Analytics, the website has had 54,099 visits from August 2013 to January 2014.
In the last several months, the Eagle Eye has averaged between 2,600 and 3,600 unique visitors and between 12,000 – 13,000 pageviews.
“I read the news at least three times a week,” says freshman football player, Michael Lewis regarding his usage of the website, “I usually read about sports, teacher of the month, or anything that catches your eye. Hence the term ‘Eagle Eye’”
“The past few weeks have been slow [for the Eagle Eye newspaper],” says 9th grade student, Jenna Chronister, “but lately the news stories that have been posted are the most interesting and attention grabbing to the site.”
On a typical day, the Eagle Eye website accumulates 200-300 page views.
But, as of Wednesday, January 22, 2014 page views have skyrocketed to over 2,000 total in a single day. The spike in views around that date was mostly due to interest in the Eagle Eye story regarding the resignation of head football coach Steve Guthoff.
“I usually read [the Eagle Eye] only when I need too in English class,” admits freshman varsity cheerleader Taylor Dixon, “but when I do read through the website, I’m always learning new information I never knew before.”
Lily Williams and Dixon both agree that sports is the main topic that should be covered more by the Eagle Eye reporters.
At the start of the school year, the website averaged only 500 views per month. Page views have grown steadily as the year proceded.
A main reason for this boost in fame occurred in late December during the annual Door Decorating Contest at TAHS.
“The Door Decorating Contest, I think, was a huge factor in the Eagle Eye’s popularity for December,” said Williams, “I think having more contests and polls could really bring in more viewers.”
