Cherry Reaches 2000 Career Assists in Her Last High School Game

With eight years of volleyball under her belt, senior Mattie Cherry has reached many career milestones. Her high school portfolio consists of being both an amazing libero and phenomenal setter for the Lady Golden Eagles.

This past Wednesday Cherry hit a milestone that not many high school volleyball players can reach. In the final game of the season, while going against Bald Eagle in the playoffs, Mattie Cherry recorded her 2,000th career assist.

While the team was not able to upset Bald Eagle, reaching this important individual milestone was a memorable moment for Cherry and her teammates.

“Reaching 2000 was definitely a bittersweet moment. I really didn’t know if I would reach it after playing libero for eight games, but finally reaching it in my last game ever at Tyrone was definitely special,” said Cherry.

After high school, Cherry plans to go to college and major in mathematics.

“I will also be playing volleyball, but I haven’t decided where I’m going yet,” said Cherry.

Cherry has been a very valuable member of the Lady Eagles varsity volleyball team and the entire program. Along with the other 2020 volleyball seniors, she has made an impact for years to come and has set a new standard for effort in the practice gym.

Cherry also chose to leave the girls’ team with some words of wisdom and encouragement.

“Only do something if you truly love it and if you love it, give it your all. Volleyball is a team sport and your teammates deserve your very best. People will remember what it was like to play with you more than they’ll ever remember how good you were. Love what you do and give your best every day and the rest will take care of itself,” said Cherry.
