Boys Track Team Wins Mountain League Championship for 2nd Straight Season
After completing an undefeated season in the Mountain League for the second straight year, the boys track team found themselves on top once again at the annual Mountain League Championship Meet. All eight schools from the Mountain League convened in Clearfield and put forth their best athletes to represent their school.
Joe Kohler led the way for Golden Eagles with two first place finishes in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. His time of 10:15 in the 3200 was a new personal best. It was an exciting race in which Kohler chased down the second place finisher from 40 meters behind on the final lap.
“I felt strong coming into the race and knew that if I kept it close I would be able to win it at the end,” said Kohler after his run, “It was good competition and I’m happy I was able to run my best time.”
Joe’s younger brother Zach had a strong day as well placing 4th in both the 1600 and 3200, both personal best times of 4:50 and 10:42.
Adam Zook won the 800 meter dash and tied his personal best time of 2:04 and was joined by John Chronister won the javelin with a heave of 138’8″. Cullen Raftery rounded out the first place finishers for Tyrone with a winning jump of 42’3.5″ in the triple jump and also placed 2nd in the long jump at 20’9″ and 5th in the pole vault.
Parker Mitchell had another impressive day across the board by placing in every event he competed in. Mitchell placed 3rd in the 100, 2nd in the 200, 4th in the long jump and was joined by Raftery, Zook and Michael Lewis on the winning 4×400 team. Their time of 3:39 was a new personal best.
Lewis placed 4th in the 110 meter hurdles and teammate Will Lash took 4th in the 300 meter hurdles. Lash rounded out the scoring for the boys on the track with a 4th place finish in the 100 and 5th place in the 200. Jake Meredith’s leap of 5’6″ was good enough for 5th in the high jump.
Aside from Chronister’s win in the javelin, the Golden Eagle throwers showed off their best abilities last night. Jeff McNelis took 2nd in the discus with a new best throw of 133’7″.
Ricky Reader placed 5th in shot put and Nick Bonsell grabbed 6th place finishes in both shot put and discus.
The girl’s squad had a solid day as well, placing 4th as team among the competitive field in the Mountain League. Tori Crabtree paced the girls’ effort with strong efforts in each of her four events. Crabtree went for 3rd in the 400, 4th in the 200, 2nd in the 4×100 relay (joined by Alainna Nevling, Lea Crofcheck and Makenzie Stauffer) and 4th in the 4×400 (with Payton Wagner, Kristen Johnson and Emily Beam).
Stauffer had strong day as well, placing 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles and 6th in the 300 meter hurdles. Johnson also turned in a hard run in the 800 and placed 2nd overall at 2:37. She was joined by Beam who managed to grab a solid 5th place finish.
Erika Voyzey and Carly Crofcheck were the only winners for the girl’s team, taking first places in the high jump and javelin respectively. Voyzey looks to continue her successful season today as she jumps in Philadelphia at Penn Relays.
Next week sees both squads head to neighboring Bellwood on Monday and Altoona on Friday for the West Central Coaches Invite, the largest high school track meet in the western half of the state.
