Boys Tennis Falls 5-2 to Huntingdon
The Tyrone Boys Tennis team has been looking forward to this season because of the strength of the roster. The team returned all but one of its starters from last year, and has added s few fresh faces to the team as well. Having some district experience on their side the team is hoping for an exciting and successful season.
After having the first two matches of their season postponed, the boys finally took to the courts for their first match against mountain League rival, Huntingdon, on Wednesday.
In the singles matches, Micheal Lewis and Noah Irvin both lost close sets and Trevor Fink lost his momentum in his second set. AJ Grassi pulled off a hard fought win and after a tiebreaker set, and number one player Ethan Vipond was able to regain control and get the ‘W’.
“It was a hard fought match. He would return the ball right back at me and force me to hit the winner,” said Vipond.
With a tough 2-3 score after the singles matches, Coach Randy Irvin paired his doubles teams carefully to try and squeeze out a victory. Sadly, both teams lost in similar fashion with competitive starts, only to drop the ball late in the match.
The first loss is always the toughest to swallow but this won’t change a thing for the team. According to Coach Irvin, there are a lot of promising things to build upon for the rest of the season. If the spring weather holds up the boys will continue their season today against Tussey Mtn. and Monday against powerhouse Altoona.
