The Tyrone Golden Eagles Boys Soccer team played a two-game slate this week with an 8-0 win at Central and a 3-2 loss on senior night against Bald Eagle.
This puts the Golden Eagles at a solid record of 8-7-1 at the end of the week with two games remaining.
Tyrone is currently 3rd in the D6 AAA playoff standings, just below Bellefonte and Hollidaysburg. The top four teams in the district qualify for the playoffs.
Tyrone 8, Central 0
The Tyrone Golden Eagles started their week off hot on Monday, October 7th with a big 8-0 away win at Central.
The Eagles started a little slow this game but finally got on the board with a Tytus Novak goal, assisted by Noah Gulvas, in the 22nd minute.
Moments later, freshman Gavin Brasher got his first career varsity goal off an unassisted second-chance shot that bounced right off the keeper’s hands to bring the lead up to 2-0.
“I feel very accomplished. You’ll always remember your first varsity goal, and I’ve been working so hard this season to get this. I just hope to keep benefiting the team in any way I can,” said Brasher.
That was the end of the scoring for the first half, but the second half added many more points so the Eagles could walk away with the blowout.
The second half started with an unassisted volley goal from Noah Gulvas, which he buried in the top left corner of the net.
Then, in the 59th minute, Noach Gulvas added another assist to his stats with a pass that led to a Ned Smearman goal.
The 64th minute included an “own goal” by the Central Dragons. Senior Jake Baker made a cross to the middle, and the Dragons kicked it in themselves, extending the lead to 5-0.
This goal started the Eagles’ scoring frenzy, they combined for four more goals within the next six minutes.
These goals were scored by Jake Baker, assisted by Gavin Brasher, Need Smearman, assisted by Nate Ellenberger, and lastly, Rowan Moore assisted by Jake Baker.
This scoring mania put the Eagles up 8-0 with 10 minutes remaining as backup keeper Devon Nardelli and the Eagles defensive line were able to hold them and get the shutout.
This marked Devon’s first career varsity shutout as he was stepping up in place for Wyatt Walls who missed the match due to an injury.
“I’m glad I could step up for the team. The defense played the main role in my shutout today. We played a very good defensive line where we held them to the point where they couldn’t get any shot off at the goal,” said Nardelli.
“Our whole team stepped up defensively. Pulling off a shutout against any team in the conference is difficult, so the team was just really glad to be able to accomplish that today, defender Grant Miller said.
Bald Eagle 3, Tyrone 2
Thursday, the Eagles hosted Bald Eagle Area on senior night, where Tyrone’s two seniors, forward Jake Baker and defender and team captain Nate Ellenberger were honored before the game.
“We have come a long way as a team since I was a freshman, and I was happy to be honored on senior night. I think Tyrone soccer has a bright future ahead of them,” said Jake Baker.
“On senior night, we poured our hearts into every moment, fueled by the energy of our shared journey. Together, we celebrated not our achievements, but the bonds that made this night unforgettable,” said captain, Nate Ellenberger.
Sadly, Tyrone and the two 4-year varsity players fell short in the end with a 3-2 loss
The Eagles started the game hot with a 1-0 lead at halftime after a Ned Smearman goal in the 20th minute assisted by Noah Gulvas.
Bald Eagle shot back at the start of the 2nd half with a goal in the 46th minute tying the game at 1-1.
The Golden Eagles were able to score another goal from Noah Gulvas assisted by Jake Baker with 26 minutes left in the match.
Tyrone maintained their 2-1 lead for the majority of the 2nd half up until 3 minutes were remaining.
That’s when Bald Eagle started their comeback and clutched with 2 goals in the final minutes of the game to rob Tyrone of the win.
The 2024 Eagles’ story doesn’t just end on senior night as they have some more games remaining.
The Eagles will face off at Bellefonte and home against Penns Valley this week as playoffs are approaching.
