Tyrone Boys’ Soccer extended their win streak to three in a row in a victory over Clearfield on Monday, October 2. This win marks the first time in five years that Tyrone has won a game away at Clearfield, and the first time in several seasons that the boys earned three consecutive wins.
The first half started off strong, as Tyrone gained a foul at the Clearfield 30-yard line. Senior captain Rocky Romani stepped up to the free kick. The ball soared and hit Clearfield’s goalkeeper hard in the hands, forcing him to spill the ball. As soon as it bounced off the keeper’s hands, Tyrone striker Connor Bardell swooped in and scored on the rebound.
Tyrone held possession for the majority of the first half, thanks to the smooth passing and sticking of tackles.
However, even the smallest mistakes can be costly. Tyrone was unable to stick a few tackles and Clearfield played a through ball, which flew past the defense and let Clearfield score.
The score was 1-1 at halftime, but Tyrone did not lose hope. In similar situations, Tyrone was able to outscore the opposing team in the second half, so morale remained high.
The second half seemed similar to the first, except there was an almost equal amount of possession between the two teams. Even though Clearfield was making more passes, though, Tyrone was playing the passes that mattered more.
Midway through the second half, a through ball was played straight through the Clearfield defensive line. The goalkeeper came out for the ball, but couldn’t get his hands on it. Senior Connor Bardell, for the second time, took advantage of the goalkeeper’s mistake, took a touch to the outside, and scored, giving Tyrone the goal advantage.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, junior midfielder Jake Baker was driving the ball down the field and made it inside the 18-yard box. Then, a Clearfield defender swiped at Jake’s feet, causing him to fall and force a foul, earning Tyrone a penalty kick.
Senior captain Rocky Romani knew what he had to do at this point. If he scored, there would be a comfortable goal cushion between the two teams. Romani shot the ball straight in the middle of the goal as the goalkeeper dived to the right. Tyrone extended their lead to 3-1.
The defense of Tyrone was able to lock down Clearfield for the remaining time, and Tyrone was able to pull out a win. Tyrone was able to force 12 corner kicks throughout the game, another sign of the dominating offense.
