Boys Right the Ship at Clearfield
The Golden Eagle basketball team had a challenging game on Friday coming off a three-game losing streak. Tyrone needed a bounceback win and got it with senior Landon DeHaas scoring 25, boosting the Eagles to a 13 point victory against Clearfield.
Ross Gampe followed DeHaas with 11 points, and Keegan Gwinn and Cortlynd Rhoades added 10 each.
Tyrone started off slow in the first quarter with just 10 points. At the end of the first, Tyrone was feeling the hot hand of Clearfield’s Cole Miller who had all of Clearfield’s 17 points.
The Golden Eagles bounced back in the second quarter, scoring 22 points and bringing out a box and one defense to slow down Clearfields lead scorer at the time. This seemed to work as the Bison only scored 10 points in the quarter, and Tyrone had a 5 point lead going into the half.
In the second half Miller went cold for Clearfield and Tyrone jumped out to a 35-25 lead with 6 minutes to go in the third.
Tyrone was able to outrebound the Bison 32-19 as Tyrone’s big men made Clearfield’s small lineup pay.
The Golden Eagles maintained a steady 10 point lead throughout most of the game and were heading into the fourth quarter up 45-36.
Halfway through the fourth quarter, Landen DeHaas stole an inbounds pass and took it down the court extending Tyrone’s lead to 58-45, slowly pulling the game out of reach for Clearfield.
“We got our bigs open and we also had 4 of our starters with double digits and it was a great recovery win after losing three in a row,” said DeHaas
Tyrone is now 12-5 overall and 8-3 in the Mountain League, reclaiming first place after their win on Friday.
Tyrone also won the JV game 61-28, with freshman Drew Escala scoring a game-high 37 points.
The boys are back in action Tuesday against Huntington at home. It is Senior Night and a ceremony will be held before the game. Tip-off is 7:30.
