The Golden Eagles went into their matchup against the Clearfield Bison with high hopes of starting their season strong. However, Clearfield senior Brady Collins had other plans.
Collins put on a masterclass performance, as he racked up 6 total touchdowns and led Clearfield to a 46-20 win over Tyrone.
“We couldn’t stop him or the run, all we can do is learn from this and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” said senior Austin Lucas.
It was truly a tale of two halves, as Tyrone entered halftime with a one-point advantage but gave up thirty-three unanswered points in the second half.
On offense, The Golden Eagles moved the ball into Bison territory on their second drive, but a fumble halted the possession. Turnovers plagued the Tyrone offense all game, with two fumbles and two interceptions.
Clearfield capitalized on these first mistakes, as they capped off a twelve-play drive after the first fumble with a rushing touchdown by quarterback Xavier Curry.
Tyrone’s offense in the second quarter showed a preview of things to look forward to during the rest of the season. This included a Trent Adams slant route resulting in an 80-yard touchdown reception.
Seth Hoover looked solid during the night, running for sixty-nine yards, including a 57-yard touchdown run that gave the Eagles a 14-13 lead with just over six minutes to go in the second quarter.
On the ensuing Clearfield drive, the Bison moved the ball down to the Tyrone 20-yard line. The Bison took a shot to the end zone, and Tyrone senior Gayge Miller secured a diving interception, ending the Clearfield drive.
Deep in their territory, Tyrone quarterback Ashton Walk connected on a deep pass to Eli Woomer, who took the pass ninety-six yards for a touchdown. Unfortunately, the play was called back due to a controversial illegal procedure call, and Tyrone entered halftime maintaining their 14-13 lead.
Coming out of halftime Tyrone started hot on defense, shutting down the Clearfield run game. The Bison offense took to the passing game, and Tyrone defensive back Klayten Moore intercepted a pass from Curry, returning it for a 20-yard touchdown to give Tyrone a 20-13 lead.
Clearfield’s Collins then responded with his third touchdown of the day, this one through the air for sixty-eight yards.
Three plays later, Collins took an interception 39 yards for a touchdown. The Bison held a 25-20 lead halfway through the third quarter, and wouldn’t trail again for the rest of the contest.
In the fourth quarter, the Bison continued their hot streak and tallied 2 more touchdowns from Brady Collins, ending Tyrone’s hopes of making a comeback.
Tyrone’s record stands at 0-1 after the week one loss and they look ahead to play Johnstown(0-1) on August 30th at Johnstown at 7 PM.
