Bellwood’s Mallory leads Eagles past Bald Eagle

Alex Schmoke traps a difficult pass

Thursday afternoon was a joyous time for the boys soccer team as they routed Mountain League opponent Bald Eagle 2-1.

The entire first half was uneventful as both teams took shots, but neither found frame.

The second half held most of the same tendencies until a through ball from the Bald Eagle midfield found a sprinting attacker. The shot hit hard off of Tyrone’s senior keeper Anthony Politza and bounced right back to Bald Eagle. Another quick shot did the trick and the ball skated past Politza for a 1-0 Bald Eagle lead.

Tyrone didn’t give up and during an offensive possession Bald Eagle was called for a foul on senior Noah D’Angelo. The foul occurred inside the 18 yard box which resulted in a penalty kick.

D’Angelo converted the PK like he has done all season and the game was tied.

After neither team could score in the remaining minutes, the game headed to overtime.

Tyrone has been no stranger to overtime this year and the experience seems to be paying off.

Tyrone kicked off first and was able to keep possession in Bald Eagle’s side of the field.  A pass from Tyler Eaken gave Nic Mallory a wide open shot from well outside the 18 yard box.

“Nic’s shot was a flashback of my game winner last year against Bellefonte,” said D’Angelo.

Unbelievably, Mallory’s shot hit net by flying into the upper corner of the goal. The Tyrone team erupted as they notched their first overtime win of the season.

Tyrone improves to 4-4 and looks to keep the momentum rolling today, against Philipsburg. Game begins at 4:00 pm at the Harry K Sickler complex in Tyrone.
