Athletes of the Week: Jason Schopp, Jared Beckwith, and Aleic Hunter

Aleic Hunter joins two previous “Athletes of the Week” for the first ever multiple feature.

D6 runner-up Jared Beckwith, D6 champ Jason Schopp, D6 4th place Aleic Hunter

This week head wrestling coach Blair Packer nominated all three of the Golden Eagles regional qualifiers for our first ever Tri-Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations to Jason, Jared and Aleic and good luck in the next round of the state wrestling tournament.

Athlete: Aleic Hunter

Sport: Wrestling

Grade: 11

Accomplishments:

Aleic Hunter wrestled 132 lbs at the District Championships.  He won 4 matches while losing 2.  He lost in the consi-finals to finish in 4th place at Districts.   His record stands at 21-11.

“Jason, Jared and Aleic have been team leaders all season and continues this role in the post-season at Districts.  They has proven themselves throughout this season through their dedication and perseverance.  They are three of the best wrestlers in the state.”

10 Questions:

1.     How did you first get involved in this sport?

When I was 7, I moved to Tyrone and my Gram got me enrolled. At first, I was horrible, but ten years later, I got the feel for it.

2.    What other sport(s) do you play?

Football

3.    Favorite professional sports team?

Denver Broncos, LA Angels, Pittsburgh Penguins.

4.    Favorite professional athlete?

None

5.    Who is your hero? Why?

My Grandparents, because if it was not for them, I would not be where I am today. They taught me what life is about and hard work is the key to success.

6.    Favorite band/musician?

Ron Pope, He is We, A$AP Rocky, and Rascal Flatts.

7.    Favorite movie?

Any Pokémon movie, Gridiron Gang, Cats Don’t Dance, and Great Gatsby.

8.    Favorite food?

Spaghetti hands down! Oh, and Buffalo Ranch Dipped Doritos. Plus Ming Ming.

9.    What advice would you give younger athletes?

No matter what, don’t give up on anything because no matter how small, big, poor, or rich you are; in the end your hard work will pay off.

10.  What are your future goals?

Hopefully get a scholarship for wrestling or football, study criminology, and one day be part of the FBI.

Athlete: Jason Schopp

Sport: Wrestling

Grade: 12

Accomplishments:

Jason wrestled 138 lbs at the District Championships this past weekend.  He won 4 matches on his way to winning a District Championship.  In doing so, Jason became Tyrone’s 77th District Champion.  His record stands at 24-6 going into competition at the PIAA Southwest Regional Championships on Feb. 28 – Mar. 1, 2014 at the Johnstown War Memorial Arena.

1.     How did you first get involved in this sport?

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson came to me in a dream and said, “Hey jabroni, wrestle!”

2.    What other sport(s) do you play?

Madden

3.    Favorite professional sports team?

The Pittsburgh Steelers and the “Mighty Ducks”

4.    Favorite professional athlete?

 Josh Koshcheck, Chris Honeycutt

5.    Who is your hero? Why?

 Url Harris, because he taught me the basics of wrestling and life.

6.    Favorite band/musician?

NWA

7.    Favorite movie?

Thankskilling

8.    Favorite food?

Sushi

9.    What advice would you give younger athletes?

Three things are infinite:

1.) Human creativity.

2.) The universe.

3.) The amount of zubats in a dark cave.

10.  What are your future goals?

 To wrestle for Edinboro on a scholarship and to catch them all is my real quest, to train them is my cause.

Athlete: Jared Beckwith

Sport: Wrestling

Grade: 12

Accomplishments:

Jared wrestled 195 lbs at the District Championships this past weekend.  He won 2 matches before losing in the finals to become a District Runner-up.   His record stands at 27-2 with his only other loss coming to the same wrestler.

1.     How did you first get involved in this sport?

My great uncle sort of talked me into it.

2.    What other sport(s) do you play?

Motocross.

3.    Favorite professional sports team?

Flint Tropics

4.    Favorite professional athlete?

Dennis Rodman

5.    Who is your hero? Why?

Robin, simply because he does all of the work and Batman gets all of the credit.

6.    Favorite band/musician?

Billy Ray Cyrus

7.    Favorite movie?

Slumdog Millionaire

8.    Favorite food?

Turkish Delight

9.    What advice would you give younger athletes?

“Stay away from ice. Never jam on the brakes.”

10.  What are your future goals?

Wrestle for FC Barcelona. Wrestle Russel Westbrook and win.
