Athlete of the Week: Nick Getz

Sport: Varsity

Grade12

Accomplishment:

Nick just earned Bellwood Invitational 2015 Outstanding Runner award Monday night for dusting the competition in the 200, 100, and 400 relay.  The school-record holder in the 100 at 10.94 seconds, Nick probably covers the track faster than most late-model golf carts.

But what we most admire about Nick is the humble demeanor that he adopts in the press.  You’ll note that in an Altoona Mirror article today he was quoted as saying, “I feel like I can beat my opponents [Central’s Justin Helsel and Bishop Carroll’s Matt Karlheim] on any given day…and that they can beat me.”

Coach Stephen Everhart’s Quote:

“This sort of humility is genuine for Nick, but it’s also disarming for his opponents.  Cocky headliners only pumps up their opponents, but Nick’s approach is legendary. He doesn’t like to talk about it much, but Nick is actually the guy who advised Andrew Luck of the Colts through his sports blog to start congratulating defensive ends after they bury his head in the backfield. “Nice sack,” Luck whispers to them, with a quiet nod to Nick.  They don’t know whether to punch the guy or kiss him, and before they figure it out, Luck’s already burned them for six—so if Helsel or Karheim look confused at the starting line Friday night at the West Central Coaches Meet, subconsciously puckering up in lanes 3 and 5 to kiss Nick in lane 4 as the gun goes off, you can be pretty sure that the race was over before it started.”
