Ask the Coach with Head Coach Jason Wilson
Each week of the football season, Head Coach Jason Wilson sits down with the Eagle Eye for an exclusive interview.
This week the Golden Eagles dominated Philipsburg on the road 42-3. The Eagles will be at home this week vs. the Bellefonte Red Raiders. We spoke with coach Wilson about last week’s game and the upcoming matchup:
Eagle Eye: Your offense has been exploding for the past 3 weeks, what do you think is the reason for that?
Jason Wilson: Everybody has been doing their job. Garrett has been on in the passing game, Aleic and Eli have been running the ball well, and the line has been doing a great job up front.
EE: Aleic Hunter rushed for 91 yards and 3 touchdowns on only 5 carries, how do you feel about his performance?
JW: Aleic is a tough runner. He is speedy, and shifty. But it really comes down to the offensive line. They opened up holes by blocking well, and opened up lanes for Aleic to run through.
EE: In what area can your team improve the most?
JW: Offensively we keep improving. That’s one of the key points in the season, to keep improving each week. Defensively we have improved a little bit here and there. We still have a lot of work to do, along with offense and special teams.
EE: You are heading into week 5, what has your team showed you each week?
JW: Starting with the first game of the year, we were down but able to come back. Then the tight game in week 2 that we won. Now the past 2 weeks we’ve faced opponents who weren’t as good as the first two record wise. We have been able to stay focused, and come out and play our game the way we can play it. Plus we have seen two different sides of the spectrum in the first four weeks, and we stuck together and took care of business.
EE: How does it feel knowing your back up quarterback Drew Hunter can step in and get the job done?
JW: Drew is a really good quarterback. He can make good reads, and cover his responsibilities. All of the back-ups do a really good job, they practice well and do what they’re supposed to do.
EE: Can you talk about the improvement in the kicking game on Friday?
JW: We practiced kicking all week, we made sure we put the pressure on. Ethan made 15 consecutive field goals [at practice]. That helped him stay relaxed and keep his head down and kick the ball properly.
EE: Knowing that you are 4-0 as a first year head coach, that must feel great. Any thoughts on that?
JW: We have to take it one game at a time. Our focus was on this week only. As long as we take it one game, and one step at a time we will reach our ultimate goals. Each week we need to make sure that we improve and focus on the game ahead.
EE: What is your focus for this week?
JW: Bellefonte has a really good running game. They have several runners that carry the ball in the wing-T offense. One of the big keys defensively is that we continue to hit our aiming points. With their offensive scheme we are going to get a lot of different angles and blocks, so we need to make sure we take care of that. Offensively we need to keep improving and do what we have been doing the past couple of weeks.
