Ask the Coach with Head Coach Jason Wilson
Each week of the season Head Coach Jason Wilson sits down with the Eagle Eye sports staff for an exclusive interview.
Eagle Eye: Do you think your offense took a step forward from the previous two weeks?
Coach Wilson: “Yes I think we definitely took a step forward. We worked on the passing game and they came through this week. Garrett played well, our receivers caught the ball.”
EE: Your now 3-0. That must feel exciting, any thoughts on that?
CW: “We have a lot of good players and I’ve got a good coaching staff around me. So its not really about me; it just takes one step at a time. Let the players play the game. The coaching staff all know their positions well and they coach those positions really well. It’s a team effort.”
EE: Do you believe your team is where they need to be?
CW: “I don’t think we’re ever going be where we need to be. We have to keep getting better so when it comes to late October and November we’re ready for the playoffs. We are going to keep putting in additional stuff and keep fine tuning everything to be perfect.”
EE: What stood out most to you during the Huntington game?
CW: “Defensively we played really well; we hit our aiming points and took care of what we needed to do. Offensively we got into a rhythm, the passing game came through.”
EE: Garrett Hunter passed for 198 yards and had four touchdowns, can you talk a little about his performance?
CW: “Garrett looked a lot more relaxed out there than he has been in the past couple weeks, and the receivers helped him out by making some good catches. The receivers need to help the quarterback get into their groove.”
EE: What about the multi-touchdown performance of sophomore Gary Weaver in the second half? Were you expecting that?
CW: “Gary had a really nice kickoff return to start the third quarter. He got to play the third quarter with the varsity line, we were pleased from what saw from Gary. He has been rotating with Aleic in the back field when he needs a break, so it was reassuring to know that when Gary steps in he can get the job done.”
EE: What is your focus for this week vs. Philipsburg?
CW: “Philipsburg spreads you out, and they are going to do some zone runs. We don’t really get to face many zone teams. So we need to make sure we hit our aiming points up front and take care of the zone blocking. On the outside they like to do a lot of short passes, so we need to make sure we take care of the slants, hitches, bubbles, and the flats.”
EE: Going on the road this Friday, do you think that will have any effect on your teams performance?
CW: “You should always have an effect on the game no matter where it’s played at.”
EE: What has your defense been showing you week in and week out?
CW: “We have to keep attacking and keep pursuing to the ball. That’s what we did last week, and that’s what we have to continue to do this week. We can’t give up any big plays.”
EE: In what areas do you think your team can most improve?
CW: “We still got to improve offensively and keep executing there. Defensively we have to cover the pass a little better. Huntington completed a big screen pass on us. That’s three straight weeks in a row that teams have completed screen passes. So we got to make sure that we are aggressive up front, but recognize the screen plays and that were covering the receivers on the passes.”
