ABC Wing Reviews: Macs Market / Gridiron

Wings are universally loved and one of the favorite foods in the area. So we decided to jump on the bandwagon and give our opinion on the area’s finest local wings. Mac’s Market / Gridiron is our second stop.

We judged three varieties of Mac’s Market wings based on four categories: presentation, wing quality, sauce, and hospitality in order to grant an overall score on our patent-pending wing-o-meter.

For this review, Andrew (A) ordered “Hot BBQ”, Bryce (B) got “Mild Garlic”, and Christian (C) got the “Toxic Waste” flavor. The price for ten jumbo wings was $9.99 + tax.

Presentation

For this category, we based the rating on how the wings looked before we began to chow down.

Overall the presentation was nothing special. The wings came wrapped in tinfoil and contained in a styrofoam box. Dipping sauce came on the side in a plastic cup. However, the wings looked tasty in a bath of sauce. Also, the smell of sauce was immediate after opening the container and filled the small seating area.

Wing Quality

For this category, The wings will receive a rating based on the overall quality, juiciness, and the bone to meat ratio of the chicken itself.

Generally, the ten jumbo wings had juicy meat, but there were some duds. The wings also came out steaming. The jumbo wings definitely lived up to the name. Each wing was good sized and we didn’t leave hungry. However, a couple of the wings had soggy skin, but the sauce helped to counteract this.

Sauce

The sauce category is about, you guessed it, the SAUCE, we are judging this category on flavor, consistency, and coverage.

A’s sauce was overall pretty good. Each wing was consistently covered in sauce, clearly sauced and tossed. There was even a little sauce left over in the bottom of the box. The “Hot BBQ” was certainly spicy which was a big plus.  Each wing had a nice kick to it which paired nicely with the tangy barbecue sauce.

B’s sauce was “Mild Garlic” and it was also pretty solid. There wasn’t much to complain about with these wings, my only downside really was for being a mild wing they were hotter then I expected but it wasn’t that big of a deal. Now for the positives, the wings were covered in sauce on both sides and were swimming in a pool of sauce at the bottom and had large chunks of garlic coating the wings, this was definitely a plus in my book.

C indulged in the flavor called “Toxic Waste”. This flavor was an amped up version of a more common Buffalo Bacon Ranch. They have hot sauce, ranch, bacon, garlic, and parmesan cheese. There was a swift kick to the jaw with the tangy flavor of the hot sauce and the garlic, but the ranch calmed that beast down. Plus, that parmesan cheese and bacon gave it more depth of flavor which makes it stand out from all of the generic, boring flavors. Also, there was a ton of sauce for my wings to bathe in and lather up.

Hospitality

This category reflects upon our overall experience at the restaurant taking into account: wait time, service,  and friendliness.

The wings took a quick 14 minutes to arrive at our table which is a fantastic time. This happened while a large influx of customers flooded into the store.  This quick time was most likely due to the fact that Mac’s Market is not necessarily a restaurant and more similar to a store. We paid beforehand so there was no hassle of receiving our checks after eating.  Also, Brian came up and asked us how our food was, you just love to see great hustle like that.

Final Score

In conclusion, the hospitality was one of the best parts of Mac’s Market. The great sauce helped to mask average wings, and the presentation was nothing to complain about. You can’t go wrong with eating wings from Mac’s Market

A – 7/10    B – 6.75/10    C – 6.5/10

After our second wing review, Mac’s Market is now our new wing champion, eclipsing The Bullpen.

Our next review will be the fan favorite Spruce Creek Tavern.
